Friends Of The Library Offer A Shower Of Events This April

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

April showers will definitely not dampen all the events planned for this month by the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library.

The Art Show is finally here from April 22-30 in the Library’s Community Room. The Friends have workshops taking place throughout the week, including pastel drawing, creating fabric flowers (for quilters and sewers), adult coloring activities, stained glass mosaics, and drawing with a live model. We’ll provide all the supplies needed. The sessions are all free but you’ll need to register beforehand, space is limited. For details, check page 24 of this issue, stop by the easel in the Library lobby, or visit our Facebook page. Finally, our  “Meet the Artist” reception, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, gives everyone the chance to meet the people behind the creativity and have the opportunity to buy a favorite piece of artwork.

Cookie Sale On April 8

Our next cookie sale takes place in the Library’s lobby on Saturday, April 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or until we run out. Cookies are $1 per bag; and if you sign up that day to become a member of the Friends during our April Membership Drive, we’ll also give you a chance to win a beautiful spring plant door prize!

That same day after the cookie sale, get ready to make some music, accordion style. From 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Library’s Community Room, Joanna Arnold Darrow, renowned soloist, staff accordionist for the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and owner/operator of Acme Accordion School in Westmont, N.J., will bring along a number of unique accordions from her own collection and answer questions from the audience. She’ll also serenade us from her amazing repertoire, and actually give participants a hands-on try at making their own music with one of these beautiful instruments.

Silent Auction Held This Month

Next, our silent auction is taking place throughout the month. We’ll have some serious prizes you can bid on, and they’ll be on display in the Library from April 1-30. Each will have a minimum bid, and participants can place their bid in a sealed box next to the item. The highest bidder by the deadline will be determined during the Artist’s Reception on April 30; once the bid pledge is received, that lucky person gets to take the item home. Some of the auction items to date include passes for Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Moorestown, certificates for gym workouts at Max Fitness in Mt. Laurel, a Double Nickel Brewery package of goodies, a hand-crocheted afghan, and a guitar. We have more items in the works and you’ll get to see them at the auction display, so stop by for a look-see the next time you’re in the Library.

Munch And A Movie On April 11

This month’s Munch and a Movie is Tuesday, April 11 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Don’t forget to bring your lunch; snacks and beverages are on us. Be surprised for April’s movie or call the circulation desk if you can’t wait to know.

Poetry Contest Submissions Due April 28

A reminder that all poetry contest submissions are due by Friday, April 28, either hand delivered to the Library or mailed to Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library Poetry Contest, 5605 N. Crescent Blvd., Pennsauken, N.J., 08110. Winners must attend the June 7 awards reception to receive their prizes.
