Hundreds Come Together To Help Ill Firefighter

It was a packed house at Colleen’s at the Savoy on Nov. 14, and they were all there for Kevin Sochanchak, a 24-year-old volunteer firefighter with the Delaview Fire Company battling Stage 4 stomach cancer.

On Nov. 14, the Pennsauken community came together for a special fundraiser to help volunteer firefighter Kevin Sochanchak, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer in September.

On Nov. 14, the Pennsauken community came together for a special fundraiser to help volunteer firefighter Kevin Sochanchak, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer in September.

The “Raising Some Love For Kevin” event brought together over 400 of Sochanchak’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters, as well as many other members of the Pennsauken community who came to help support Kevin in his time of need. The guest of honor, accompanied by his girlfriend, Ashley Wood, made a simple, yet grand entrance into the event, with the theme to “Rocky” playing in the background. Sochanchak, a man of few words, was visibly overcome by the amount of support he received, and offered his heartfelt thanks to those who helped make this fundraiser possible.

And it was quite an event. In addition to a wonderful spread put together by Chef Les Friedman, “Raising Some Love For Kevin” featured a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, door prizes, and a DJ. There was even an “after party” held at Bobby Ray’s in Pennsauken to help raise even more money.

Overall, $18,000 was raised to help defray Kevin’s medical costs as he battles cancer. And even more is being done to help relieve the burden of growing medical costs. An ongoing online fundraising effort has already raised an additional $1,000.

These fundraising efforts could not have been made possible without help and support to the community. Special thanks goes to the Sochanchak and Wood families; Gina Goetschius and ATailGatersLife; Colleen’s at the Savoy; Steve Volkert and The Quiz Kids; the Delaview Fire Company and the Pennsauken Fire Department; Bryan Robey from Roger Wilco in Pennsauken; Bryson’s Pub; and Bobby Ray’s Pennsauken Tavern.

For years, Kevin has helped to save lives in this community. Today, this community continues to do what they can to help save his.
