PHS Athletic Hall Of Fame Class Of 2016 Inducted

By Eric Mossop, Athletic Director, Pennsauken High School

Every two years, the Athletic Department accepts nominations for induction into our Athletic Hall of Fame. This year, the committee considered 15 nominations and recommended eight deserving individuals and one team, who were inducted at halftime of the football game against Cherry Hill West on Sept. 24. Congratulations to past student-athletes Dennis DeShields, ’69, Jason Hicks, ’85, Clifford Kent, ’70, Scott McNair, ’87, Ralph Roesler, ’70, and Major Smith, ’69; coach and educator Scott Jones, ’79; and sports booster Steve Sperduto, ’81. In addition, the NJSIAA Group IV State Championship 1980 football team is the third team to be inducted in to the PHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Football Off To 2-0 Start

The PHS football team put up 42 points in each of their first two games as they got off to their first 2-0 start since they won the NJSIAA South Group IV State Championship in 2011. Amazing play from Martin Booker, Zaire Davis, Josh Echevarria, and Cedric Jones has anchored the Indians, as they have broken through the Courier-Post Top 25 as the number 22 team in South Jersey!  Upcoming contests against Cherry Hill West and Camden Catholic will go a long way in determining how far this team can go, but there is no doubt that this season has the potential to be a special one for the Code Red football team!

Friday Night Lights On October 7

Mark your calendar NOW for Friday Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m., when your Indians take on the Camden Catholic Fighting Irish for our annual “Friday Night Lights” game at historic Vince Mac Aneney Field. There is expected to be a huge crowd on hand to support our Code Red football team, as this annual event is quickly becoming a very popular event at PHS!

Wrestling Alumni Makes WWE Debut

2005 PHS wrestling alumni Jose Cordero made his WWE debut on “Main Event” on Sept. 19, as Lince Dorado, after a successful stint as part the WWE Cruiserweight Classic. While pursuing his dream of entertaining WWE fans, Jose was a high school math teacher residing in Florida with his wife and three children. Congratulations to Jose; we all are following your WWE career closely with PRIDE!
