Friends Of The Library In May: Mother’s Day, Museums, And Movies

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

May has a lot more in store than the usual spring flowers we all look forward to. By now, the poems have been submitted for our annual poetry contest and judges are busy reading each one to decide the winners. Keep an eye out for a congratulatory letter if you’re one of the lucky ones, then make sure you’re free June 1 at 7:00 p.m. for our awards ceremony honoring all our winners. Good luck!

Just in time for gift giving, we’re holding another of our famous Friends’ cookie sales on Saturday, May 7 from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. or until the cookies run out. This is the day before Mother’s Day. What better gift than homemade cookies for that very important person? We plan on having a large selection to choose from, but be safe and get there early to make sure you have your pick. Once you’ve satisfied your sweet tooth – or your gift-giving responsibilities – check out the book exchange taking place that day in the Library, sponsored by the Merchantville Woman’s Club. Bring some books you’ve already read, and take home some you haven’t. Books and cookies: perfect together.

Woman’s Club Holds Second Annual Book Exchange

The Woman’s Club of Merchantville’s Evening Membership Division will host the second annual book exchange on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 at the Pennsauken Free Public Library, 5605 N. Crescent Blvd. The exchange will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and run through 5:00 p.m. on Sunday or until the books run out.

Bring in your gently used books to share with the community, then take home books you have yet to read. Hardcover and paperback books for adults or children, in decent condition, will be accepted. Please do not bring magazines or text books. Any books left over at the end of the exchange will be donated to an appropriate charitable organization.

Throwback Thursday: Philly Comic Book Convention Draws South Jersey Fans, Pennsauken Business

Wizard World Philadelphia, our area’s largest comic book and pop culture celebration, is just a little under a month away. This year’s event, held June 2-5 at the Philadelphia Convention Center (yes, you can still buy tickets here), features such big name stars as Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, and Chris Hemsworth from the Marvel movie franchise; Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson from “Back to the Future,” David Duchovny from “X-Files,” and everyone’s favorite butt-kicking heartthrob from the zombie apocalypse, Norman Reedus from “The Walking Dead.” As we lead up to this great event that’s a short hop, skip, and web swing from the Betsy Ross and Ben Franklin bridges, we thought it’d be fun to look back at our very first story covering Wizard World Philly.

Comic books. Over a decade ago, these stories of heroes faster than a speeding bullet were seen more as junk taking up space in your parents’ basement than an actual force of pop culture. Today, comics have gone from a collector’s item for select enthusiasts into a true global phenomenon, leaping from the printed page to the silver screen, and turning masked avengers into a billion dollar industry.

As part of the process, the Township Committee is seeking feedback from residents and businesses. To help facilitate this process, there is an online survey where residents can share their ideas on a variety of issues pertaining to Pennsauken’s vision.

Looking Ahead To Better Things In Pennsauken

John-KneibBy John Kneib, Mayor of Pennsauken Township

By now, most of you have heard the exciting news: the Camden County Improvement Authority has sold the property which used to house the Pennsauken Mart to Delco Development, LLC. The developer plans to build a high-end apartment complex and retail space there. And they’re looking to break ground this fall. You can read additional details about the development of the Mart site by clicking here.

So forget the ice hockey rink. Forget about Renaissance Walk. Forget the rumors about low income housing. With the county finally selling the property to a highly-motivated and experienced real estate developer, all of that can stay in the past where it belongs.
