By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

The Westmont Philharmonia Accordion Orchestra (WPAO) is performing a free concert on Saturday, March 10, from 11:00 a.m. to noon in the Community Room.

WPAO is a classical symphonic orchestra made up of 10 highly-accomplished accordionists. With Stanley Darrow as its principal conductor, WPAO features virtuoso artists and guest conductors from around the world, and its concerts have been enjoyed throughout New Jersey and the United States and Europe. The harmonies and musical expertise of the members combine to create a chamber ensemble experience.

The orchestra’s diverse repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary, and their March 10 performance will take the audience on a worldwide tour by representing regions of Europe and Asia that include pieces such as “Irish Suite – Reel and Jig” by Seiber; “Hungarian Dance #5 & #6” by Brahms; “The Italian in Algeria” by Rossini; “In the Mountains of Central Asia” by Borodin; “Santander” by Leutwiler; and “Kalif of Bagdad” by Boieldieu. The concert will end with a spirited performance of “Latina” by Bencriscutto, a composition originally written for a marching band.

“Chat And Chew” Referendum Public Meeting At Library Today

A “Chat and Chew” event at the Pennsauken Free Public Library, 5605 N. Crescent Blvd., will be today, Tuesday, March 6, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Members of the public unable to attend an evening meeting can take this opportunity to learn about the upcoming referendum vote and ask questions.

The proposed referendum, which comes to a vote on Tuesday, March 13, addresses a variety of projects in every part of the District, including new security vestibules at all schools; capital improvements to elementary schools with new windows and doors; the establishment of all-day pre-school; the demolition of an aging Longfellow Elementary and the erection of a comprehensive community park and playground in the school’s old footprint; the addition of three new science labs and six additional classrooms at Phifer Middle School; the transformation of Roosevelt Elementary into a high-tech magnet high school, with the addition of a brand new gymnasium; and extensive renovations at Pennsauken High School, with improvement being made to the auditorium, library, locker rooms, and gymnasium; and construction of a plumbing lab. The proposal also adds significant improvements to the high school that will benefit the student-athlete. Plans call for the building of a brand new, state-of-the-art field house, new tennis courts, and an all purpose turf field, lights, and an eight-lane track.
