Friends Of The Library Have One Busy Fall

September is quickly shaping up to be one really busy month. In addition to all the programs and events mentioned in last month’s article, the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library have added a few more.
Now through Oct. 10, the Friends will be collecting donations of books, CDs and DVDs in the Library’s Community Room in preparation for the annual fall book and tech sale. Start combing your bookshelves, closets, and basements to gather your already-read books to drop off. It’s never too early, but please, NO damaged books, magazines or encyclopedias!
On Sept. 15, the Friends host a free, hour-long, NJ Division of Consumer Affairs program, “Senior Fraud Education and Protection,” at 11:00 a.m. in the Community Room. The presentation will show how to guard against dangerous scams that promise big rewards, and what to do if you happen to fall prey to one of them. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.
On Sept. 27 at 2:00 p.m., you’re in for a treat at the “History of the Jersey Shore” talk and slide show, also in the Community Room. Presenter Kevin Woyce has spent years compiling interesting tidbits and gossip guaranteed to fascinate. We’re also holding a cookie sale in the lobby that day to whet your appetite, not only for the goodies on sale, but as a reminder that our annual bake sale is coming up in October. Kevin’s book will also be on sale for $10, so you can have it autographed on the spot.
On Sept. 29-30, smart drivers will have signed up for the AARP certified “Smart Driver Class,” given this time in Spanish. Registration for this class is limited; if you haven’t already signed up at the Circulation Desk, please plan do so as soon as possible and be ready to leave a check made out to AARP for the $10 registration fee due for each participant. Course materials will be in both English and Spanish.
For those of you who really like to plan ahead, here’s a hint of what’s happening in October. On Oct. 4 at 2:00 p.m., the Friends host the Samaritan Hospital program, “Think. Talk. Act.” Attendees will learn how to initiate family conversations about end-of-life concerns. Then, beginning Oct. 15, you’ll be able to buy our annual fundraising raffle tickets at the Circulation Desk. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. The prizes are always a treat, and we’re finalizing those as we speak, but be assured they’ll be state-of-the-art, high tech, and well worth the small ticket price.
On Oct. 16-18, you won’t want to miss the annual book, tech and bake sale during regular library hours. And on Oct. 24, we’ll be co-hosting “Knowledge through Books and Stamps,” in conjunction with the Merchantville Stamp Club.
