A New Year, A New Board Of Education

By the Pennsauken Board of Education: Nick Perry, President; Allyson Meloni-Scavuzzo, Vice President; Cheryl Duffy; Michael Hurley; Diane Johnson; Leona Moss; Meg Snyder; Orlando Viera; and JoAnn Young

As we usher in a New Year, the Pennsauken Board of Education will start 2017 with its annual reorganization meeting. The purpose of the reorganization meeting is to certify and accept the November election results, officially install those individuals who were successfully elected in November and to appoint the Board of Education’s President and Vice president for the upcoming year. For districts that hold their elections in November, this special meeting must, by law, occur during the first week of January.

The Pennsauken Board of Education had three seats that were up for election to a three year term in November. The successful candidates included two current members of the Board of Education who were re-elected, Nick Perry and Joann Young. Jennifer Slattery was also elected and will be a new member to the Board. Mr. Perry, Mrs. Young and Mrs. Slattery will be officially sworn in during the reorganization meeting which will occur on Thursday, Jan. 5, 7:00 p.m., in Room 327 of Pennsauken High School, located at 800 Hylton Rd.

As these new members take their seats, we will be saying goodbye to Meg Snyder, who will be concluding her three-year term. Mrs. Snyder was an important part of many initiatives that the Board completed, including updating our entire policy manual, which had not be reviewed in over 20 years; as well as helping to re-vamp the district website.

The annual Board reorganization is always a time filled with excitement, as we move toward achieving our future goals with the newly seated members. We, as a Board, look forward to working together in 2017 to ensure the success of the Pennsauken School District. We wish all members of the Pennsauken School District and the residents of Pennsauken a successful, happy and healthy New Year!

Board Bit Of The Month

Board of Education elections in New Jersey historically took place during the month of April, with re-organization immediately following. In 2012, the State of New Jersey gave districts the option to move their elections to November. Pennsauken Board of Education elections have been held in November since that time. As a result of this change, reorganization for the Board now occurs in January.
