Enjoying The Homegrown Fruits Of Your Labor
By Kathleen Harvey, Owner, Plant Artistry, LLC
Imagine plucking ripe, luscious fruits from trees in your garden. Enjoying fresh peach salsa, poached pears, or spreading homemade plum preserves on warm bread is the epitome of a gardener’s reward. As fall approaches, the air is cool and apples ripen. Pull an apple from the tree, hear the crisp snap as you bite into it and taste the sweet tangy flavor as the juice spreads over your taste buds.
Spring Cleaning In Pennsauken: Hazardous Waste Collection, Shredding, And More
By Joe Scavuzzo, Director, Department of Public Works
Each year, the County sponsors numerous waste collection events to help its residents properly dispose of various items around our homes, garages, and sheds to protect the environment. It may sound like a nagging chore to do, but the benefit it has on our local bodies of water far outweighs any inconvenience of disposal.
April Marks Ninetieth Anniversary Of Nellie Bly Wreck In Pennsauken
By Robert Fisher-Hughes, AAP Columnist and Amateur Historian
Ninety years ago, the first of two fatal train wrecks occurred near the same curve of track at Derousse Ave. in Delair. While the toll of this earlier accident was much less in terms of loss of life and injury, the response of the community was similar in both tragedies, evoking both shock and horror and a rising to the occasion that we would well remember to this day.
Springtime, Allergies And More On Bob The Cat
Ah, the sweet smell of spring! Then the “ahs” become “ah-choo!” Sneezing and snorkeling go hand in hand with the balmy breezes. I’m just getting over the winter cold virus, and now transition to a pollen-induced drippy nose. At least I didn’t put away the tissues in my truck, shop, and every pocket of my jackets and shirts.
Celebrating 68 Fabulously Groovy Years
By Judith Kristen, AAP Columnist
By the time you have this month’s AAP in your hands, I’ll be just two days short of my 68th birthday.
Now most of us, after say age 40, don’t do much about birthdays for another decade, until it’s another one of those “landmark” ones that Hallmark has cards for, you know… 50, 55, 60, 65…
Personally, I think every day is a landmark day, as is every additional year, and it requires celebration even if you’re the only one celebrating it.
Updates On Denim Shirts And Homeless Cats
My kids are dictating this month’s column. Apparently, friends and co-workers are clamoring for more information, and I have been called upon to update past stories. In particular, interest abounds regarding the fate of my favorite shirts, and more specific information about my new friend, Bob the cat.
Remembering The Love And Kindness Of Mark Fillari
By Judith Kristen, AAP Columnist
If you were a customer at the Merchantville Post Office, then you surely knew Mark Fillari. And not just because Mark was an exceptional postal worker for 30 years; it was because Mark was an exceptional guy – period.
His sudden passing on December 31, 2015 at the age of 56 was a tremendous shock and huge loss to his family: his darling wife, Angela; daughter Stephanie; sons Nick, Dominic, Mark; and the rest of his beloved family. He adored each and every one of them. All you had to do was mention his wife’s name or something about one of his children, and there was an immediate sparkle in his eyes and a bright, wide smile on his face. And the community loved Mark too, because he made all of us feel like an extension of his own family.
Bob Hanging Out With… Bob
I was sitting on my back steps yesterday, enjoying the sunshine, chatting with my new friend, Bob. Actually, I was talking, Bob was listening. Bob rarely speaks, as Bob is a cat. His presence in the neighborhood goes back to springtime, when he appeared in the alley, along with a few siblings, climbing in and out of my old wooden fence. We all generally ignored each other throughout the summer. The siblings seem to have moved on, but Bob remains.
Valentine’s Day At Public Works: Hold The Snow… Take The Chocolates
By Joe Scavuzzo, Director, Department of Public Works
We’ve seen a lot of weather changes in the past two months: 70 degrees on Christmas to frigid days the third week of January. With the looming winter weather bringing us painfully cold wind, we can only dream of the springtime.
A Love Affair Long Ago In A Galaxy Far, Far Away
By Judith Kristen, AAP Columnist
My magnum opus to love in the month of February generally has but two themes: my permanent crush on my husband, Andrew, or my ongoing romance with the Beatles over the last 52 years.
This time it’s different. This time, my friends, it’s a “Star Wars” thing.
Yup. A “Star Wars” thing.
