It was 1964. A gallon of gas cost 28 cents, The Beatles were the hottest band on the planet, and The Penn Queen Diner opened its doors for the very first time.

Yes, this month, on November 16, 2014, that famous landmark at Rt. 130 and Westfield Ave. celebrates its golden anniversary!

A Historic Wedding With A Twist

Half a century ago in April 1964, a young couple was married at Temple Lutheran Church in Pennsauken. The ceremony, performed by Pastor George L. Garver, was not in itself unusual, drawing as it did from the Lutheran prayer book and time-honored tradition. There were the family and friends of the betrothed, the groom in his classic tuxedo, the bridesmaids in blue and the bride in white with a long veil. However, there were also approximately 20 police officers keeping watch on a crowd of about 500 onlookers, and the guests included members of the national press.

Every so often an opportunity comes along to fill this space with blatantly self serving advertising. This is one of those times.

The Harvest Festival, held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 12 to 4 p.m., is being held at the new sports complex off of Westfield Ave., behind the MPWC offices, across the street from B. Tait’s shiny new construction company, otherwise known as the former Carlin’s Market for you old timers.

Pinsetter Bar And Bowl Offers Something For Everyone

“We’re not a snack bar bowling alley.” That’s the mindset of Mark Platzer, owner of Pinsetter Bar and Bowl, located at 7111 Maple Ave. in Pennsauken. Long gone are the days of the old Maple Bowl. Pinsetter’s kitchen has a staff of six and a kitchen manager and head chef with a fine dining background; but the establishment still caters guests as old as three and bowlers as young as 92. “We think we have something for everybody.”

Dealing With Downed Trees In Pennsauken Township

By Bernie Kofoet, Public Works Superintendent

Trees are an important part of our environment. They produce the oxygen we breathe. They provide cool shade from the hot summer sun. For many, they are a source of winter heat. We build our homes with lumber from trees. Chances are, at least part of the paper you are reading is made from trees.

The majority of Americans have way too much salt, fat, and sugar in their diets. But cutting back can be challenging. How can you keep food flavorful without the unhealthy additives? My favorite substitute is fresh herbs from the garden.

Making A True Scientific Breakthrough Regarding VW Beetles

By Bob Wagner, AAP Columnist

I made a major discovery last night that just may set the scientific world on its ear!

I had taken the VW out for an evening ride to the every Wednesday night gathering of car guys on Main St. on the Maple Shade/Moorestown border. As a group of us stood around trading stories and reminiscing about our youthful adventures in things automotive, the discovery hit me like a thunderbolt!
