The Pennsauken Board of Education recently recognized three seniors from Pennsauken High School as students of the month: Jasmine Magalong, Brianna Rowland, and Leonardo Reyes.

Jasmine is in the top 20 of her class with a 4.0 GPA and is vice president of student rights for the school’s student body. Magalong has been involved in color guard for four years and currently serves as co-captain. Jasmine is also secretary of the National Honor Society and has performed over 40 hours of community service. She would like to become a nurse and attend the University of Maryland to receive her BSN.

Brianna is student body president and vice president of the National Honor Society. Rowland takes AP classes and is involved in yearbook club, French Honor Society, Leo Club, and Pennsauken Stages. She also is on the school’s bowling team and manages the boys track team. Brianna has 93 hours of community service and plans to earn many more before applying to her top three colleges: Temple University, Rowan University, and West Virginia Wesleyan. She would like to study musical theatre and one day perform on Broadway.

Leonardo is vice president of student activities for the high school’s student government and is in the top 20 of his class with a 4.2 GPA. Reyes is a member of the Leo Club, where he has accumulated 58 hours of community service; works on the school newspaper; and is involved in S.A.D.D., yearbook club, and photography club. Carson Students Hold Mock Presidential Election

Yesterday, students at Carson School took part in a special event celebrating the voting process by holding a mock presidential election.

The mock election was developed by Mrs. Savino and Tryon’s gifted classes. Students presented the idea to the school’s principal, Mrs. Joyce; employed Google Documents to record and tally the results; and helped students with the voting process. Students could choose from the two main presidential candidates and even got a sticker for voting.

Throughout the day, election results were announced over the loud speaker to help simulate how different parts of the country receive updates on the election after polls close in areas with different time zones.

So how did it all break down? One candidate received 83 percent of the vote with a decisive victory. We’ll have to see how this fun and educational event reflect the actual results of today’s general election.

A Strong Effort In October For Pennsauken Schools

By Ronnie Tarchichi, Superintendent of Schools, Pennsauken School District

As we put a close on October in the 2016-17 school year, I would like to first thank the teachers and students for their hard work during this month. I understand that teachers are the backbone of our district and I am especially grateful for their diligence. Students, as school work gets harder, please remember these words from Pele: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”

Intermediate School Holds STEM Camp

By Angel-Marie Cook, District Science Supervisor

Pennsauken Intermediate School hosted its third annual summer STEM Camp from July 11-22. With an aeronautical focus, students investigated flight through the lens of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Each day, students participated in inquiry driven classes based upon NASA’s Summer of Innovation curriculum. Using concepts of physics and mathematics, students explored the forces of flight, Newton’s laws, the dynamics of aviation, and the power of engineering design. Led by four of Pennsauken’s finest science teachers: Trever Miller, Pennsauken High School; Amy Fisher, Phifer Middle School; and Kathleen Blair and Jennifer Miller, Pennsauken Intermediate School, students cycled daily through four, 40-minute, inquiry driven, hands-on classes. Students anchored learning to Next Generation Science concepts and practices, while building understandings and bridging applications. Students demonstrated their knowledge on the last day of camp to a packed house of parents, siblings, and friends in a “STEM Showcase.”

Technology-based presentations, as well as field testing of student designed kites, rockets, and flying shoeboxes, exemplified learning outcomes and the knowledge mastery of the young budding scientists.

The 2016 Aeronautics STEM Camp proved that the “sky is the limit” when it comes to scientific learning.

Carson Students Grow At Community Garden

carsoncommunitygardenThroughout the summer, the Carson Gifted and Talented program participated in Pennsauken Township’s Community Garden, located behind the Pennsauken Free Public Library. Students prepared and planted their garden plot at the end of the school year and were able to see the fruits of their labor in the summer.  Thank you to Mrs. Tryon and Mrs. Savino for organizing this project!

Transporting Our Students To And From School

By the Pennsauken Board of Education: Nick Perry, President; Allyson Meloni-Scavuzzo, Vice President; Cheryl Duffy; Michael Hurley; Diane Johnson; Leona Moss; Meg Snyder; Orlando Viera; and JoAnn Young

The purpose of any school district transportation services department is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities. New Jersey law defines the rules governing the transportation of students. The Pennsauken Board of Education has a long tradition of providing transportation services that far exceed what the State requires.
