Longfellow Poets Winners In Library Contest
On June 3, several students from Longfellow Elementary School were awarded for their outstanding poetry! Chloe Burgos from Ms. Grant’s kindergarten class; Angelina Thach and Angel Vazquez from Mrs. Shaner’s second grade class; and Andre Pratt from Mrs. Padalino’s fourth grade class were all in attendance at the Pennsauken Free Public Library during the annual poetry contest to share their award-winning poetry!
All of the children did an amazing job and their poetry is currently on display at the Library. The teachers at Longfellow would like to extend their gratitude and thank the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library for providing the student with such a wonderful opportunity.
Congratulations to the winners!

The two intrepid researchers are seen here with Angel Cook, district science supervisor and Thomas Honeyman, the principal Howard M. Phifer Middle School, who certainly appreciated the focus of the project!
Board Of Education Congratulates PHS Class Of 2015
For the members of the Class of 2015, their years in the Pennsauken School District have come to an end. Like so many of the graduating classes before them, the achievements of this class are to be celebrated. Many of our graduates will be going on to further their education in college. Others will be advancing their skills in technical schools to prepare them for a career in a trade. Still others will be entering the military to begin a career in service to our country. Whatever path they have chosen, we, the Board of Education, hope that they look back on their years in Pennsauken schools with pride and fond memories that will last a lifetime.

Carson Students Excited To Watch Things Grow
Mrs. Davis, ESL teacher at Carson Elementary, reports that the first grade English Language Learners explored how things around us change and grow. They were all thrilled to see that little tiny seeds could grow to be big green plants.
By reading “The Tiny Seed,” by Eric Carle, the first graders learned that some seeds don’t get the chance to grow into beautiful plants. Students also discovered that they could do their part to help nature, by being careful where they step and by not hurting bees and butterflies so that plants can grow and make the environment BEAUTIFUL!
Ceremony Honors Military-Bound High School Students
A formal ceremony to honor military-bound high school seniors from Camden County – including several from Pennsauken – took place on May 19 at the Mansion in Voorhees. Over 300 people were in attendance, including the families of the enlistees, local celebrities, elected officials, area college presidents and school administrators, high school counselors, representatives from all Camden County veteran’s organizations, and high ranking military officers from all five branches.
The program was made possible through the efforts of an all-volunteer non-profit organization, Our Community Salutes (OCS). OCS began in 2009 in Camden County and is now being duplicated in nearly 40 communities throughout the US.
“This is a time for us to thank and honor the high school graduates going into the Service who often receive little recognition,” said the OCS President and Founder, Kenneth Hartman, Ed.D. “These young men and women may be going off to war and need our praise, guidance and support.”
The following local enlistees were recognized at the event:
Pennsauken High School
- Lorenzo Morales, US Army
- Nhiem Bien, US Marines
- Cheavin Kim, US Marines
- Imani Glover, US Navy
- Andrea Perez, US Army National Guard
- Nini Tran, US Army National Guard
- Thang Ngo, US Army National Guard
Camden County Technical School – Pennsauken Campus
- Luis Mansilla, US Army
Pennsauken Counselor Honored
In addition to the over 50 students recognized at the formal ceremony, Dennis Armento, a counselor at Pennsauken High School, received the General Colin L. Powell Service Award. The annual award recognizes the critical responsibilities high school counselors have in providing guidance, counseling and mentoring; and, in educating, coaching and assisting all students as they assess their accomplishments, talents, interests and aspirations.
Approaching Summer With Plans For The Upcoming School Year
As we approach the summer months, the signs of the new season are becoming more and more visible. We see flowers blooming, the trees finally becoming full with leaves, and the weather becoming warmer each day. After months of cold weather and very few symbols of nature’s beauty, summer’s first signs always provide us with a time to think about the past and approach our new season from a fresh perspective.
Changes To Registration Procedures For Pennsauken High School
Last month, the Board Bits article focused on a discussion of the laws and subsequent policy that addresses residency eligibility and registration procedures associated with student enrollment and attendance in our district. This information was provided to emphasize the importance of this issue for all members of Pennsauken Township. The Board of Education wants to ensure that only students who are eligible to receive an education in Pennsauken are benefitting from this service. In order for the Board to achieve this goal, it is crucial for all parents and guardians to keep the school district administration informed of their current address, phone numbers, or any living arrangements or guardianship changes that may have occurred since the initial enrollment of their child.
Carson Celebrates “Read Across America” Week
In March, Carson School celebrated “Read Across America” with a week’s worth a fun activities designed to fuel students’ excitement for reading. The theme for Carson School’s 2015 reading celebration was, “Reading is a Treasure!”
A special kick-off event featured a pirate play. Teachers Ms. Christina Fessler and Ms. Julie Amer dressed as pirates and performed an entertaining play about two buccaneers squabbling over a lost treasure. The pirates finally opened the treasure chest to reveal a fortune worth its weight in gold: BOOKS!
The students and staff had a great time!
