Join the Pennsauken Historical Society on Sunday, June 1, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., for our open house at the historic Burrough-Dover House, where we’ll be celebrating Father’s Day and Flag Day with a special themed event that blends history, family, and fun!
Did you know Father’s Day didn’t become a national holiday until 1972? The first known celebration took place in Spokane, Wash. in 1910, organized by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. It took decades of advocacy before President Nixon signed it into law as an official U.S. holiday.
We’ll also be exploring the history of Flag Day, with engaging displays and patriotic flair. Visitors will have the chance to create their own DIY family flags with fabric and markers provided (while supplies last), a fun way for kids and adults alike to reflect on their family’s unique identity.
Come out, bring your dad, and enjoy a day of community, conversation, and appreciation. Learn about the history behind Father’s Day, celebrate the fathers in your life, and create a keepsake flag to take home! Light refreshments will be available, and tours of the house will be ongoing throughout the afternoon.
Burrough-Dover House is located at 9201 Burrough-Dover Ln., off Haddonfield Rd. near the Wyndam Rd. traffic light. Admission and tours at Burrough-Dover House on Sunday, June 1, are free of charge. There is also plenty of free parking. Donations to support our historical work are always greatly appreciated and Pennsauken Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Memberships and volunteer opportunities are available for you!
