As a kid, I remember riding my bicycle with my brother, winding our way down side streets in order to get to the Clip Joint and get our hair cut. We’d sit down and wait patiently for owner Al Segrest, or one of “the girls,” to trim the mop on our heads, watching out for the “Alfalfa-like” callick and somewhat odd hairline in the back. The haircutting ritual was so ingrained in our minds, we could get there almost by autopilot.
As a “grown-up,” that routine hadn’t changed, until August 23, 2013, when a fire displaced the business, along with the Community Sports Shop that was right next door. And while Joe and Laura Ladik, owners of The Community Sports Shop, made a successful move to 21 North Centre St., Al always had plans to return to the spot where he had been cutting hair for 46 years. And as of last month, Al and the girls have returned to 107 South Centre St. in Merchantville.
“It’s wonderful to be back,” says Segrest. “It’s fantastic.”
The inside of the building has been completed renovated, offering a brighter atmosphere to complement the attitudes of the staff. There are plenty of laughs to be had, along with a pretty good hair cut to go with it.
The prices have stayed the same: adult cuts, $16; kid cuts, $14; senior cuts, $12. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Al and the girls look forward to seeing you; there’s seating available and the old location offers plenty of parking. As for directions to The Clip Joint, there’s really no need. A lot of you already know how to get there by heart.
