Festive Music, Food Trucks, And Fireworks Return With Summer Kickoff Bash

By Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor

Great music, good food, and the return of fireworks will be the hallmarks of Pennsauken’s 2019 Summer Kickoff Bash. Held from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18 at the Pennsauken Community Recreation Complex, located at the corner of Westfield and Bethel avenues, the entire community is invited to take part in this special celebration.

“Our Summer Kickoff Bash has all the elements for a great party: good food, music that will get you up on your feet, and an impressive fireworks display,” says Pennsauken Mayor Jack Killion. “Even with inclement weather last year, we had a good turnout. If Mother Nature cooperates, this will be a perfect opportunity for our residents to come out and celebrate.”

Several food trucks have committed to provide fare for the Summer Kickoff Bash: local favorite Mama’s Homemade Meatballs, which opened up a brick-and-mortar component to their business here in town; Barkley’s BBQ, offering the “best soul food in Philly;” Philly Goodfellas, selling Italian-style sandwiches and other specialties; and Kona Ice, featuring cool treats including shaved ice and ice cream. In addition, attendees ages 21 and older will be able to enjoy an onsite beer garden.

Pennsauken’s first responders will also help add to the festivities. The Pennsauken Township Police Department will hold K9 demonstrations; share information about Team Pennsauken and the Police Unity Tour; and have a dunk tank where guests can soak one of their favorite officers. Pennsauken’s Fire Department will demonstrate firefighting/rescue techniques; provide important information about fire prevention; and run a “mister” to keep attendees cool. There will also be a “touch-a-truck” area, where children and adults alike can explore several emergency vehicles.

Like last year’s summer kickoff, there will be great musical performances. InSession is a local band that performs classic R&B, jazz, and dance songs from the 70’s to the present day. Also on stage will be the tribute band, The Best of the Eagles, a group of professional New Jersey musicians who are passionate about their love of the Eagles music and who have all worked with numerous national touring artists.

Finally, an intense fireworks display will cap off an evening filled with fun and entertainment.

“We’re excited to be able to bring our second annual Summer Kickoff Bash to Pennsauken,” says Elwood Martz, Parks and Recreation Department, Pennsauken Township. “We hope that our neighbors come out for Pennsauken’s new official start of summer.”
