Friends Of The Library Hold Fundraiser, Art Show

The Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library will be the beneficiary of a “Dine to Donate” fundraiser food extravaganza on Wednesday, April 17, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Silver Diner, 2131 Rt. 38 in Cherry Hill, across from the Cherry Hill Mall. Bring your appetite and as many friends as you want; let the servers know you’re there for the Friends of Pennsauken Library; and 20 percent of your total bill will be donated to the Friends at no cost to you.       

Art Show Held April 29 – May 5

Art projects are soon due for our annual Art Show and Sale, held April 29 through May 5. Entries will be accepted at the Library for all art work on Thursday, April 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; and on Friday, April 26, from noon to 5:00 p.m. Art projects fall into many categories – charcoal, pastels, watercolor, oils, fabric, wood, metal, papier-mâché – so take your pick. All entries will be on display in the Community Room throughout the week during regular library hours, culminating in a Meet the Artist reception on Sunday, May 5, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Participating artists must be residents of Pennsauken or Merchantville in age groups from eighth grade through adult. You can find all the particulars of getting your entry ready for the show in the Art Show booklet on the lobby desk.

While all the art projects remain on display throughout Art Week, we have a wonderful repertoire of workshops and how-to sessions scheduled. They’ll all take place in the Community Room as well. Be sure to register for each workshop you’ll be attending on the sign-up sheet at the Circulation Desk, though; space is limited and on a first come, first served basis. Here’s what’s planned:

Portrait Drawing with Fran Bennett, PHS art teacher, will be held on Sunday, April 28, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Participants are limited to 15 people and all supplies will be provided at no cost.

Making A Sachet Bag with Barbara Piperno helps sewers create a sachet bag from a variety of pre-cut fabric we’ll supply. Bring along a pair of small scissors and a thimble if you need one. The workshop takes place Tuesday, April 30, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and is limited to 10 participants.

Card Making will take place Wednesday, May 1, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Participants get to create and take home two handcrafted greeting cards under the direction of two experienced card makers. A fee of $4.00 per participant covers the cost of materials.

Fun With Mixed Media, presented by Eleanor Gribok, will be on Saturday, May 4, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., gives participants the opportunity to create a mixed media piece of their own choosing. Instruction and all materials are provided at no cost.

Finally, we request that all children be 10 years of age or older and accompanied by a responsible adults for the entire session. 

Poetry Contest Held Next Month

 Have you found your inspiration yet for a poem to enter in this year’s annual poetry contest?  The contest is open to Pennsauken and Merchantville residents from kindergarten through adults and submissions are limited to one entry per person. Applicants cannot have won in the previous two years and all entries must be original. We’ll be honoring all the winners at our Awards Night, May 22. Entries and information have already been mailed out to area schools, but you can learn all about submission rules, categories, age groups, topics, etc. in the brochure you’ll find at the Library’s Lobby or Circulation Desks. So time to get busy writing and maybe we’ll be honoring you at our awards presentation on the 22nd!
