Pennsauken native Kelly Killion is the new head coach for American University’s women’s basketball program and was officially introduced to the Eagle community during a press conference on April 8.
“Thank you for being here to celebrate a great moment for our women’s basketball program for our department and for our university,” said David Bierwirth, associate director of athletics for American University. “Kelly Killion embodies the values and mission of American University, and we are confident that she will lead our women’s basketball program to new heights.”

“Kelly has a very strong track record of both competitive and academic success as a coach and standout player,” continued Jonathan Alger, American University president. “The student athletes are going to learn a lot of skills that will make them successful not just in basketball, but in their careers and in life.”
Killion comes to AU after spending nine years with the University of Pennsylvania’s women’s basketball team, last serving as assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator. During her time there, she helped to build two Ivy League championship teams, including the program’s fourth title in a six-year span in 2018-19. She has also coached at both Sacred Heart University and William & Mary College. As a player at Holy Family University, Killion was a four-year letterwinner and a three-time team captain, earning a two-time Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, a two-time ECAC first-team selection and a two-time second-team selection. She is also a member of the Holy Family Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2021. And during her four years at Camden Catholic, she was a 1,000 point scorer, earning All South Jersey, All Conference, All Parochial, and All State accolades.
“We were looking for a proven winner, someone who has not only built a program from the ground up but understands that success goes beyond the scoreboard; it’s about recruiting and developing players on and off the court, shaping them into leaders and individuals of character,” added American University Director of Athletics and Recreation JM Caparro. “We wanted someone with grit passion and drive that would align the culture of our department. Without a doubt, I’m confident we have found that person.”
During her remarks, Killion was extremely grateful for the opportunity and that becoming head coach of AU’s women’s basketball team was an amazing honor. She then shared with the Eagle community what they can expect from the team moving forward.
“You will see a passionate gritty and selfless group who will work extremely hard on a daily basis,” explained Killion. “We will strive to outwork our opponents and put our best foot forward each time we step on the floor. The members of our program will represent themselves, their families, our alumni, and American with great pride respect and dedication on the court and in the community.”
Killion also expressed her heartfelt thanks to U of Penn Coach Mike McLaughlin and her fellow assistant coaches at the Quakers, who helped shape her into who she is today, both professionally and personally.
“During my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with talented coaches who have helped shape my path in coaching and life. It has been a great honor to serve alongside each of you.”
She also shared her true appreciation for her family and close friends, especially her partner E.J., and son, Eddie.
“Thank you for pushing me beyond what I thought I was capable of and never allowing me to settle. Your love and support mean the world to me. To E.J. and Eddie, I would be lost without you. I love you both.”
Killion had a final word to her players at American University.
“As we begin this next chapter together, I promise to work hard for you tirelessly, to challenge you, and most importantly care for you. I look forward to cultivating a culture that we can celebrate and be proud of for years to come. Now let’s get to work.”
