Louisiana Chicken Now Open In Pennsauken

By Rachael Shugars, AAP Columnist

My adventure to this next location begins one day in October, when I had my son, Jack, and my nephew, Ryder, who are both two years old. We had just attended an event at the Pennsauken Free Public Library, along with some energetic playtime outside at the nearby playground. Suddenly, I had two toddlers screaming that they were hungry, and I needed to find them food before the “hanger” set in.

I remembered speaking with my editor about the new Louisiana Chicken on Rt. 130. Anyone in my family knows that I have a deep dislike for fast food chicken. I’ve been called crazy for thinking that Popeyes’ chicken is the furthest thing from appetizing; and my feelings for places like Boston Market and KFC don’t stray far from that. But, I soldiered on and decided to try this new chicken joint.

Earlier this week, Pennsauken Mayor Jack Killion was on hand to officially cut the ribbon on the new Louisiana Chicken restaurant on Rt. 130, across the street from Howard Hill Furniture.

It’s accessible from every direction and isn’t a long drive from the Library. I rounded the corner of the drive thru with two wacky toddlers and placed our orders. The boys got “shrimpies,” which is the kids’ meal version of a fried shrimp platter; it came complete with shrimp, fries, a biscuit, and a drink. I ordered the fish sandwich with fried okra and a side. I got a biscuit as well, which came with my meal, but no drink was included. The cool part is that all of their fountain drinks are only a dollar if you stick with the 16 oz. option.

Ryder made short work of his shrimp and most of the fries. My son, who is sometimes a fussy eater, eventually enjoyed all parts of his meal as well. The drinks are big for a toddler but a good size for any 8 to 12 year-old. The pink lemonade was pretty good. My fried okra was tasty; I’ve always enjoyed fried okra and had the luxury of growing up with a mother and grandmother that really knew how to cook the stuff, so for fast food standards, I’d say it was definitely good. The fish sandwich was okay. It comes with a LOT of sauce on it, as well as cheese, which I sometimes find unusual for a fish sandwich. If you don’t like messy stuff, make sure you ask for no sauce or only a little bit. The sweet tea was good, especially for only $1.

Overall, it was a good, quick fix meal for me and two kids when I absolutely didn’t want to get out of the car to try and corral them into high chairs. Kids’ meals are about $5 and you get a good amount of food. My meal was about $8. Head over for yourself and give me some feedback on what you think. Give the fried okra a try and enjoy your Food Adventures!
