Each year, the Board of Education is required to hold a reorganization meeting by the seventh day of January. During this meeting, newly elected board members are installed and the Board chooses its president and vice president. This year’s meeting was held on Jan. 5. In conjunction with this reorganization meeting, we wanted to introduce the members of the newly seated Pennsauken Board of Education, each of whom will be working together to continue making Pennsauken schools successful.
Cheryl Duffy
Ms. Duffy is a new member, having been elected for a three-year term in November 2015. She has lived in Pennsauken for more than 40 years and is a graduate of Pennsauken High School, as are her three children. She has served on the Pennsauken Police Department for over 26 years and is currently assigned to the Detective Division as a sergeant. In the community, she is a member of the Pennsauken Domestic Violence Response Team and is a new grandmother!
Diane Johnson
Ms. Johnson was appointed to the Board in March 2015 and won re-election in November 2015. She has lived in Pennsauken for over 20 years. After graduating from Rosemont College, she spent 30 years in the banking industry. Ms. Johnson is retired United States Air Force reservist and also served for two years in the Air National Guard. Currently, she is a member of the Pennsauken Library Board and Environmental Commission, among many other organizations.
Michael Hurley
Mr. Hurley, a lifelong Pennsauken resident, was appointed to the Board in March 2015 to fill an unexpired term and won re-election in November 2015. His Pennsauken roots extend back over 100 years. Mr. Hurley has a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from St. Joseph’s University. He works as a recruiter and an assistant basketball coach at Paul VI High School. He has been on the Pennsauken Harvest Festival board for two years and is a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Leona Moss
Ms. Moss has served on the Board since May 2014. She has lived in Pennsauken for over 10 years. Ms. Moss earned her bachelor’s in Sociology/Community Health from St. Joseph’s University and her master’s degree in Counseling from Eastern University. Currently, she works for Kaplan as a proctor for SAT/ACT test. Ms. Moss is also certificated in disaster relief with the Red Cross.
Nick Perry
Mr. Perry is beginning his third year on the Board. He was recently re-elected as Board President. He attended Penn State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree. He earned his master’s degree from Beaver College in Environmental Education and a master’s degree in Middle Eastern Politics from Gratz College. He was a teacher in Philadelphia School District for over 30 years. In the community, Mr. Perry is involved in the Knights of Columbus Council 6735.
Allyson Meloni-Scavuzzo
Dr. Meloni is currently entering her sixth year with the Board and was recently elected as Board Vice President. Dr. Meloni is a lifelong resident of Pennsauken and attended Pennsauken schools. She graduated from Dickinson College with dual degrees in Psychology and Spanish. She earned her master’s degree and doctorate in Psychology from Rutgers University. Dr. Meloni is employed as a professor at Camden County College and Rutgers University. In the community, she is involved with St. Stephen’s Church and has volunteered for numerous community events, including the Pennsauken Harvest Festival.
Meg Snyder
Mrs. Snyder, a lifelong Pennsauken resident and graduate of PHS, is beginning her third year on the Board. Her husband and two children are also PHS alumni. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University. She worked for 27 years as a nurse for the Pennsauken School District. She retired in 2013 as the Pennsauken School District Chairperson of Nursing Services. In the community, Mrs. Snyder is involved with the Merchantville Woman’s Club as well as the Food Bank of South Jersey, and recently was appointed as a volunteer member of the Township’s Board of Health. Mrs. Snyder is an avid swimmer and loves the Pennsauken Pool!
Orlando Viera
Mr. Viera is a new Board member, having been elected in November 2015. He is a 2007 graduate of Pennsauken High School and has lived in Pennsauken for over 20 years. Mr. Viera has coached for PYAA baseball and basketball for 10 years. He also has volunteered for Youth in Action, an organization that gives youth an opportunity to get involved in community engagement and activism. Mr. Viera is excited to use his position with the Board as a way to give back to his community.
JoAnn Young
Mrs. Young, a 20-year resident of Pennsauken, is married with two children and two grandchildren. She is beginning her third year as a Board member. She is employed as an OS&D clerk, a problem solving position, at New England Motor Freight. In the community, she plays the piano and teaches Sunday school at Faith Independent Bible Church. She is politically active in constitutional and conservation principles.
We invite all residents to attend our monthly meetings, held the third and fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m., to see the members of the Pennsauken School Board as they work diligently to ensure the success of Pennsauken School District!
