Gary Robert Burgin, age 69 years of Pennsauken, passed away on December 15, 2024. Born in Camden, NJ, to the late Earl J. Burgin and Miriam H. Burgin, Gary grew up in Pennsauken, where he played sports and shared his musical talents. He graduated from Pennsauken High School, class of 1973.
Gary joined the Fire Department upon turning 18. Representing the third generation of the Burgin family in Delaware Gardens, Gary followed in both his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps in becoming a Delaware Gardens Fireman. He enjoyed serving as a firefighter alongside his father, uncle, and cousins. Gary became a career firefighter in 1983, working in the Fire Prevention office and later in a dual role with Pennsauken Township as the Construction Official. After serving and rising through the ranks, he became the District Chief of Station 4 in 1989. He also served as the Chief of the Pennsauken Fire Department and assisted in the consolidation of Stations 2 and 4. Gary was an instructor at the Camden County Fire Academy and an adjunct professor at Camden County College, the President of the Camden County Fire Chiefs and Fire Officers Association, and an instructor as part of the Tri-State Maritime marine firefighting program, where he was able to travel the world and share his expertise in fire science. After retiring from the career service, he was able to serve as Station Captain and Battalion Chief. He was active in the training programs as well.
Gary, a graduate of Trenton State College (not to be confused with TCNJ, as he would point out), sought many ways to contribute to his community. Before his career as a firefighter, Gary earned his bachelor’s degree in Special Education and was a school teacher and soccer coach. He was a dedicated parishioner and servant to Temple Lutheran Church in Pennsauken, where he spent 15 years leading their mission trip to rehabilitate senior citizen housing outside of Charleston. He was also a devoted member of the Saint Joseph’s Carpenter Society. In addition, Gary served as president of the Pennsauken-Merchantville Rotary Club, earning the Paul Harris Fellow for his dedication to the community.
Gary was the very definition of a dedicated husband and father. Married for 34 years, he met his wife June during their time at the local Methodist church as children. He supported his children’s endeavors, even if it meant sitting through the same dance recital, marching band show, or bowling meet numerous times. Despite their protests, his interest in history and trains guided many a family vacation. He strived to make sure they knew he always loved them more. He was an avid Penn State and Philadelphia sports fan.
Gary is survived by his wife June (nee Wyatt) Burgin of 34 years, daughter Abigail Burgin, son Earl Burgin, sister Marilyn Burgin, and beloved cat Cydney.
