What started out as way for two parents to fight the summer “brain drain” for their children has turned into a business that’s educated hundreds of eager young minds throughout South Jersey.
Pennsauken-based Tailored Tutoring was started by both Shawn Jones, a longtime elementary school educator, and her husband, Jeffrey, as a way to provide additional tutoring for the children during their summer vacation. According to study by the University of Missouri-Columbia, research indicates that students lose one to three months worth of learning when they return to school from a long summer break.
“My husband and I educated our children year-round,” says Shawn R. Jones, tutor/co-owner of Tailored Tutoring. “As a result, our daughter, who was valedictorian of Bishop Eustace Prep, graduated from Princeton University in 2014; and in 2010, our son graduated from Rutgers Honors College with highest honors.”
As they saw their children advance above their grade level in all subjects, the Joneses decided to offer tutoring services to other families, creating a business that has lasted over 15 years.
“Both of our children attended Pennsauken’s public school system for elementary and middle school,” says Jeffrey H. Jones, business developer/co-owner. “We believe other children deserve to have the same educational opportunities we were able to give our children.”
