Pennsauken’s First Ever Autism Awareness Expo On April 24

By Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor

Editor’s Note: Due to the ongoing construction at the Pennsauken Country Club, the Autism Awareness Expo has been moved to a new location: Eden Gardens, formerly The Regal, 1444 Rt. 73, in Pennsauken.

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, a special event is being organized to support and empower families with special needs. Scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, the town’s inaugural Autism Awareness Expo will take place at Eden Gardens, formerly The Regal, 1444 Rt. 73, in Pennsauken, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Open to the public, this free event aims to shine a light on the challenges faced by individuals with special needs, like autism spectrum disorder, and their families. It also serves as a platform to showcase the various resources available to support these families in their journey.

AUTISM FACTS

Approximately one in 36 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Signs of autism can include challenges in social interaction and communication, repetitive behaviors, and sensory sensitivities.

Individuals with autism often possess unique strengths and talents, making them valued members of our communities.

It is important to create more inclusive environments, where individuals with autism feel valued and supported. For additional resources on autism, visit Autism Speaks at autismspeaks.org or the Autism Society at autismsociety.org.

“Whether you have a family member newly diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or have been helping a loved one with special needs for several years, it can be difficult to know what resources are available to help,” said Deputy Mayor Jessica Rafeh, whose daughter, Karina, has autism. “We hope that our community event on April 24 will assist families and point them in the right direction.”

Over a dozen organizations will be on site, providing information about their services and programs tailored to meet the unique needs of special needs families, including:

  • Alan Trotty, Behavior Therapist
  • Arc of Camden County
  • Ashley Danielle Design Company
  • Autism Speaks
  • Connect Plus Therapy
  • Hurley’s Heroes
  • Interactive Kids
  • NeurAbilities Healthcare
  • Pennsauken Police Department
  • Robbie’s World Foundation
  • Rowan University
  • Special Olympics
  • Weisman Children’s Medical Day Care and Outpatient Rehabilitation Center
  • We Rock the Spectrum

In addition, speakers from several of these groups will share insights, experiences, and valuable information on navigating the challenges these families face on a daily basis.

“Families who care for those with special needs know how important it is to foster a community that promotes acceptance, inclusion, and understanding,” added Deputy Mayor Rafeh. “It is the hope of the entire Township Committee and Pennsauken’s administration that our Autism Awareness Expo helps to make our home more of a place that is welcoming and accommodating to those of all abilities.” For more information regarding this event, contact Juan Vazquez at (856) 665-1000 x151 or jvazquez@pennsauken.gov.
