Pennsauken’s Juneteenth Celebration On June 14

By Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor

Pennsauken invites the entire community to the Township’s first-ever Juneteenth Celebration. Held on Saturday, June 14, noon to 3:00 p.m. at the town’s municipal complex, 5605 N. Crescent Blvd., this special event honors equality, community, and culture.

“We couldn’t be prouder to celebrate Juneteenth with our family, friends, and neighbors,” said Pennsauken Mayor Nicole Roberts. “It’s an amazing opportunity to embrace freedom and equality, as well as promote that universal truth that love and acceptance are so much stronger than hate and division.”

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned that slavery was abolished in the United States and that they were free. The oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is marked by music, dance, food, and community. It also is an opportunity to reflect on African American history and culture, as well as the ongoing struggle for equality and justice for all.

For Juneteenth, attendees will have opportunities to enjoy food, music, vendors, and a video game truck for the kids; connect as a community committed to unity, and honor the significance of the day along with special guest speakers. A true highlight of Pennsauken’s celebration will be the performance of the Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble, one of the largest professional authentic dance groups in the country.

“Juneteenth is more than a celebration; it’s a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we must go together,” said Mayor Roberts. “As we mark this historic day here in Pennsauken, we hope that you’ll join us, as we stand united in hope, in justice, and in love.”
