PHS Track Continues To Post Record Times

By Eric Mossop, Athletic Director, Pennsauken High School

Coach Clinton Tabb and the PHS boys track team are breaking school records faster than we can put them on the record boards this school year! After an impressive winter track season, boys track has brought home consecutive team championships from both the Woodbury Relays and the Georgian Court Invitational Relays. Martin Booker, Jr. left Georgian Court with as impressive a day as any track athlete in recent history, posting New Jersey’s current number one time in BOTH the 100m (10.87 s) and the 200m (21.96 s)!

Not to be outdone, Coach Phil Zimmerman and the girls squad continue to impress. Personal records were recorded by numerous student-athletes at Georgian Court, including top three finishes in the 4x100m, 100m, 200m, 800m, 1600m, 4x400m, and steeplechase. Senior Amanda Bakley won the steeplechase to cement her status as one of the top in the state in the event.

More Team Updates

Coach Jack Killion Jr.’s boys volleyball team is making a strong playoff push. They currently boast a strong 8-3 record, including victories over Cherry Hill East, Clearview, Moorestown, and Williamstown. Malek Maddah currently leads the team in kills with 83; Robert Macauley leads the team with 27 blocks; and Tuan Nguyen leads the team with an impressive 272 assists!

Coach Byrd and the baseball team have battled to a 3-4 record, including a walk off 3-2 victory in the first round of the BCSL Tournament against Delran. The team looks to turn the corner in the coming weeks to make their first playoff run since 2012.

Coach Marc Granieri and the softball team have struggled this season, but have shown signs of promise with sophomore Nicolette Mastromarco and freshman Rachel Hershey. Senior Lisa Hershey has kept the team’s spirits high as they head toward a favorable part of their schedule to try to make a late playoff run.

Coach Shana Smeriglio and the girls lacrosse team have started to come on as of late, winning two of three since the seniors returned from their senior trip. Selena Carter leads the team with 15 goals and Janiskaliz Espada has added 10 of her own. The team is right on the cusp of qualifying for the playoffs for a second straight season, and hopes to continue to push toward that goal!
