Programming At Pennsauken Free Public Library Celebrates Black History Month

The Pennsauken Free Public Library proudly celebrates Black History Month during February with author talks, lectures, arts and crafts, story times and more.

Award Winning Journalist Returns To The Library

Ed Eisen, a longtime reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Bulletin, as well as a public relations professional for over 30 years, makes his return to the Library on Sunday, Feb. 3, with “A Reporter’s Front Row Seat To History, Part II.” Eisen will speak about his interview with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., world boxing champ Joe Frazier, and others. This special presentation begins at 2:00 p.m. in the Library’s Community Room.

The Code Quilt Of The Underground Railroad

A special presentation, “The Code Quilt of the Underground Railroad,” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1:00 p.m. Learn from Darlene Parker about how quilts may have been used to communicate information to African slaves about how to escape to freedom via the Underground Railroad. After the presentation, join Library staff to help make one, big quilt.

Harriet Tubman’s Journey From Slavery To Freedom

Marilyn Lake presents “Harriet Tubman’s Journey from Slavery to Freedom” on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 6:00 p.m., in the Library’s Community Room. Come out to see “Moses,” and hear her talk about the people she met along the way. She will show items from her travels that led her and others to the promised land, using a network of safe places known as the “Underground Railroad.”

“I Remember Dr. King” Storytime

A special all ages Library Storytime, “I Remember Dr. King,” will be on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 6:00 p.m., in the Library’s Community Room. Featuring a performance by the amazing Mlanjeni! Magic, comedy, puppets, music and more are blended together in this mesmerizing storytelling spectacle!

Ki the storyteller is preparing for the annual Dr. King Day ceremony, but none of the forest animal puppets are planning to attend. They are preparing for a shopping spree at shopping centers with the Dr. King sales. Heated arguments begin when the animals can’t agree on where they will go. Ki gets them to see why Dr. King and his philosophy remain important today.
