Public Meeting On Transit-Oriented Development In Pennsauken Planned For May 21

The Pennsauken Transit Center Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Study Project Team invites community members to a open house-style public meeting on Tuesday, May 21, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Pennsauken Municipal Building, 5605 N. Crescent Blvd. This meeting aims to gather valuable feedback on making the area surrounding the Pennsauken Transit Center more welcoming, connected, and pedestrian-friendly. Housing options will be a key focus of the proposed improvements, and community input is crucial for integrating these effectively.

The project, led by NJ TRANSIT’s Transit Friendly Planning Program staff, underscores the importance of community engagement in envisioning TOD at the Pennsauken Transit Center. Throughout 2024, the team will be actively participating in community events to ensure a broad range of voices are heard.

NJ TRANSIT has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) Transportation and Community Development Initiative (TCDI). This grant will fund a study on the feasibility of TOD and transit-friendly improvements within a half-mile radius of the Pennsauken Transit Center, encompassing both NJ TRANSIT and municipally-owned properties.

About Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)

Transit-Oriented Development focuses on the concentration of development around public transit stations—such as train, bus, or light rail stations. These developments are typically mixed-use and dense, providing residents with amenities within walking distance. The goal is to create sustainable, livable communities where people can live, work, and play without needing a car.

Facilitating TOD is a key goal in NJ TRANSIT’s 10-Year Strategic Plan, NJT2030. This plan promotes a sustainable future by developing walkable communities, engaging in adaptive reuse of property, and fostering a green economy through reduced transportation emissions.

There will not be a formal presentation during the event; several information boards will be on display for resident to review. Representatives from the Study Team will be on site to speak with attendees. In addition to the open house public meeting, residents are encouraged to fill out a brief online survey from NJ TRANSIT about transit-oriented development preferences in Pennsauken Township.
