Two student representatives from Pennsauken High School had a seat at the table during the Pennsauken Board of Education’s monthly public meeting in September. PHS seniors Yaniel Colon and Jordyn Seldon were on hand to share the thoughts and concerns of the high school student body.
“We have two student representatives here with us today,” explained Diane Johnson, Board of Education member. “Their objective is to represent the student body to the board, and to share ideas and concerns throughout the year.”
“I stand before you today as the student body representative and class president of Pennsauken High School, representing the voices and concerns of the student community,” said Colon. “We are eager to collaborate with the board, administrators, teachers, and parents to address concerns and raise awareness of the positive and more inclusive environment that empowers every student at Pennsauken High School.”
Yaniel stressed the importance of recognizing Suicide Prevention Month, as suicide is the second leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 24; and in the United States, nearly 20 percent of high schoolers have serious thoughts of suicide. He also commented on the need for students to have access to feminine hygiene products, as required by the legislation enacted by Governor Murphy. In closing, he shared the student body’s appreciation for offering extracurricular activities and welcoming their voices through clubs and other organizations.
Addressing the concerns of honor societies and clubs, among other groups, Jordyn asked that teachers and counselors communicate more clearly regarding their office hours, so that students can better take advantage of them. She also shared the request that teachers create class materials both digitally and on paper, so that students can keep up with lessons in the case of technical issues with Chromebooks. Finally, she expressed students’ frustration with the e-hallpass application, as many students and teachers are still learning how to use it effectively. “The Board thanks both Yaniel and Jordyn for coming,” said Board of Education President Nick Perry. “If we don’t hear from our students, we’re not aware of how we can help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out so that we can address the needs the students might have.”
