The Pennsauken Police Department and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office have announced charges against an individual involved in a fatal hit-and-run motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a single motor vehicle.
The collision occurred in the 6300 block of Westfield Ave. on December 17, 2021. The victim, Mayra Polanco, age 47, of Pennsauken, was struck by a vehicle and left at the scene. The driver of the striking vehicle was found to have fled.
Investigation by the Pennsauken Police Traffic Division led to the vehicle and the driver being identified. The driver, Luis Mercado, age 34, of Cooper Landing Road in Cherry Hill, was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and driving while suspended and being involved in a motor vehicle accident resulting in death. Mercado was arrested today by members of the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force in Camden City.
Mercado is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
