Friends Of The Library Hold Second Annual Valentine’s Day Cookie Sale
By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library
February: a month to celebrate presidents and precedents. And while Presidents’ Day gives many of us a well deserved day off, Valentine’s Day is a tried and true old standard for lovers everywhere. Last year, the Friends of the Free Public Library added what we hope will soon become a February precedent for Valentine’s Day aficionados: our second annual Valentine’s Day Cookie Sale. On Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 11:00 a.m., we’ll fill up the tables in the Library’s lobby with home-baked cookies, just in time for gift giving to all those special someones on your list. And at just one dollar a bag, you can fill a basket full of cookies. Come early, though. We usually sell out fast; and once they’re gone, oh well…

Friends Of The Library In May: Mother’s Day, Museums, And Movies
By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library
May has a lot more in store than the usual spring flowers we all look forward to. By now, the poems have been submitted for our annual poetry contest and judges are busy reading each one to decide the winners. Keep an eye out for a congratulatory letter if you’re one of the lucky ones, then make sure you’re free June 1 at 7:00 p.m. for our awards ceremony honoring all our winners. Good luck!
Just in time for gift giving, we’re holding another of our famous Friends’ cookie sales on Saturday, May 7 from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. or until the cookies run out. This is the day before Mother’s Day. What better gift than homemade cookies for that very important person? We plan on having a large selection to choose from, but be safe and get there early to make sure you have your pick. Once you’ve satisfied your sweet tooth – or your gift-giving responsibilities – check out the book exchange taking place that day in the Library, sponsored by the Merchantville Woman’s Club. Bring some books you’ve already read, and take home some you haven’t. Books and cookies: perfect together.

Reflection On A 20-Year Community Friendship With The Pennsauken Library
By Robert Fisher-Hughes, AAP Columnist and Amateur Historian
Unless you are a teenager, or not much past, 20 years doesn’t seem to be a very historic period of time looking back. On the other hand, yesterday’s news is already history. It all depends on perspective and the relative significance of events. Measured by these factors, the founding of the Friends of Pennsauken Free Public Library is historic, because of the fundamental worth to our community of the Library itself. In these years of challenge for our local public institutions, it is all the more so.
Friends Of Library Congratulate Poetry Contest Winners
The six judges had a tough time choosing the best from among the 341 entries – nearly 100 more than last year – in the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library’s 15th annual Mary W. Levin Poetry Contest. Students from six Pennsauken schools participated, along with several home-schooled poets and a baker’s dozen of adult entries rounding out the pack. Not only were the poems themselves creative, but equally so were the “vehicles” they came on: literally all sizes and shapes ranging from 5” x 6” scrap paper to an 8” construction paper fir tree. Several even came with accompanying drawings on extra-large 11” x 17” sheets!
