Celebrating National Infrastructure Month, Beginning Leaf Collection Season

By Joe Scavuzzo, Director of Pennsauken Public Works

November is Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness and reaffirm the commitment to keep our country’s critical infrastructure safe and strong. We often overlook critical systems until they fail, immediately impacting our lives. Utilities, like water, electric, and sewer, are the first that come to mind, but also include roads and communication. With all things being tied to the internet, there is a host of effort put in place to keep the digital security of these systems intact.

Introducing A New Curbside Leaf Collection Schedule

By Joe Scavuzzo, Director Of Pennsauken Public Works

This article marks the beginning of a new and improved leaf pile collection operation at Public Works. In response to resident requests for a curbside leaf pile collection schedule and sign posting, the Township has created a program that is currently advertised on the Township’s website and social media accounts; the Public Works Facebook page; and this article.

Leaf Collection Season Begins For The Public Works Department

By Joe Scavuzzo, Director, Department of Public Works

This article marks the beginning of leaf collection operations at Public Works.

Our crews have begun the process of driving each street of town in search of piles of leaves. It is highly encouraged that you bag your leaves whenever possible. However, there are parts of town, where the density of large, mature trees makes bagging your leaves prohibitive, requiring the Department of Public Work’s collection efforts. The main reason we encourage residents to bag leaves is to protect our storm water inlets along our streets from becoming clogged, preventing the flow of water from the street into the storm water system. In addition to this, any fall breezes that come through won’t blow that leaf pile back onto your lawn or all over the street! The bagged leaves that are collected by South Jersey Sanitation on Wednesdays are taken to Smith Orchards for recycling. Each year, the Township compiles a tonnage report based off of the yard debris collected, similar to the white goods collected and our annual recycling collection; and receives credit towards our annual recycling grant.

Public Works Weekend Leaf Collection, November 18

This Saturday, Nov. 18, Pennsauken’s Department of Public Works will start collecting leaves in the East Pennsauken/Chadwick/Meadowbrook section of town.

For residents in these areas that miss this collection, or for those whose leaves have not yet been picked up, a reminder that leaves that are in cans or bags less than 50 pounds will be picked up by Waste Management on Wednesdays. In addition, Public Works makes two trips in each section of Pennsauken for leaf collection before operations shut down at the end of December.

By Joe Scavuzzo, Director, Department of Public Works

The Camden County Division of Environmental Affairs has embarked on a new initiative to expand the recycling efforts of all towns of Camden County. Pennsauken Township has already begun outreach initiatives to businesses and is looking to expand to religious institutions, schools, and our residents.

Autumn In Pennsauken: Preparing For Leaf Collection

By Joe Scavuzzo, Director, Department of Public Works

I hope everybody is recovering from the humid start that September had. Those that wished for summer to continue had their wishes granted, with temperatures in the mid 90’s and humidity levels high. If you’re like me, I look forward to the cooler temperatures this new season offers with a coffee or glass of wine on the front porch after dinner.

This brings us into our next season: leaf collection. Leaf collection operations generally begin in late October and are completed around the end of December. Every section of town will have leaf pickup at least twice during this time. This is, in addition to the weekly Wednesday “yard debris” pick-up, when Waste Management will pick-up your bagged/bundled items. We ask for your patience while we are working in your neighborhood, as our large equipment could end up blocking parts of the street or intersection.

Falling Leaves: To Bag Or Not To Bag?

By Joe Scavuzzo, Director, Department of Public Works

At the end of my October article, I asked if the dry weather of summer and September would continue into a dry fall, causing leaves to fall early. Hurricane Joaquin answered that question pretty thoroughly! With the news showing devastating flooding down the Jersey Shore and down the East Coast, Pennsauken was spared major damage. There were a couple calls for fallen trees in streets over that weekend, but nothing compared to that storm on June 23 of this year.

Leaf Collection Today, Snow Plowing Tomorrow

BernieKofoetBy Bernie Kofoet, Public Works Superintendent

Articles for All Around Pennsauken are submitted approximately three weeks prior to the publication date. It is difficult to predict what the weather will be that far ahead. Heck, many times the weather people can’t get it right a few days in advance!

That being said, two things are certain. We know that leaves will fall. We also know that winter follows fall.
