Reuniting And Opening Up With Old Friends

WagsphotoBy Bob Wagner, AAP Columnist

Thanks to all of you who asked about missing me last month. It does the heart good to hear from folks who take the time out of their busy schedules to read whatever foolishness I’ve plopped on the pages of our town’s newspaper.

The reality is… I played hooky. I goofed off. I did what we all yell at our kids about: waiting ‘til the last minute. Then suddenly, the lights go out, everyone goes home, and you are sitting on the bench in the dugout, with no one to play with. Not so this month. I have hours to go before my plane leaves for Albuquerque. I will sit with my friends from 48 years ago, retelling old lies, and trying to remember what it felt like to be 19 years old, and invincible.

American Legion Post Offers Camaraderie, Support

When John Brouse came back home from serving in the Persian Gulf, he struggled to deal with post traumatic stress disorder. By his own admission, it prevented him from attending social events. But an invitation to attend a party hosted by American Legion Post 68 from Jeff Brown, a local veteran and owner of Stephenson Brown Funeral Home, and some gentle prodding from his wife, changed his life for the better.

JackKillionBy Jack Killion, Mayor of Pennsauken Township

This time of year, we all try to give some serious thought to all the things we’re thankful for. And on Nov. 11, we focus on our veterans, thanking them for their service to our country and what they all gave up in order to maintain the freedom and prosperity that we enjoy here in the United States of America.

Remembering Our Vets And A War That Began 75 Years Ago

BobFisher-HughesBy Robert Fisher-Hughes, AAP Columnist and Amateur Historian

2014 has been a year of historic anniversaries, of local and global significance. This year, New Jersey attained the ripe age of 350. Pennsauken’s own “Jersey Joe” Walcott was born 100 years ago. The 50th anniversary of the Pennsauken wedding of Chubby Checker and Dutch beauty Catherina Lodders occurred earlier this year. And it was also a century ago that the world was plunged into the cataclysm of the Great War, which altered human affairs in so many ways.

Thanking Veterans For Their Service Every Day

WagsphotoBy Bob Wagner, AAP Columnist

Every so often, something printed on a card or bumper sticker catches my eye and makes me smile. And ever so rarely, a saying makes me think. That happens less and less lately, as my arteries harden, and real thinking occurs only on really good days. My usual November thoughts live and die around pies of pumpkin, and turkeys roasted. But this little bumper sticker on the car in front of me the other day reminded me that Veterans Day also occurs in the month of the turkey.
