Trick Or Treating Safety Tips

The Pennsauken Township Police Department is sharing some helpful tips so that Trick or Treaters have a safe and fun time on Halloween.

All costumes should be made of light-colored, fireproof material. When going out on Halloween, children should wear proper fitting and comfortable costumes and shoes. Props, such as toy guns or swords, should be made of pliable material. Realistic replica firearms should never be used. Masks and wigs should not be worn if they impair vision.

Young children should not go out Trick or Treating alone; they should always be accompanied by parent, guardian, or another trusted adult. For older children, make sure they stick with friends and inform you what route they are taking. If they have a cell phone, have them keep it with them and on so they can contact you in case of an emergency.

Pennsauken Township has a curfew of 8:00 p.m. on Halloween. If your Trick or Treaters go out after dark, make sure they are wearing reflective clothing and carry a flashlight. Adult chaperones should also have a flashlight as well.

While Trick or Treating, stay on sidewalks, not on the street. Avoid backyards, shortcuts, and alleys. Trick or Treaters should walk, not run, and look both ways when crossing the street.

During Trick or Treating hours, 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Halloween, motorists should drive slowly, yield to young pedestrians, and watch out for Trick or Treaters darting into the street.

When leaving your house for Trick or Treating, be sure to keep your doors and windows locked. If you are staying home to greet Trick or Treaters, pets should be kept inside and in a safe place, away from frequently opening doors. Most importantly, children should never go into a home of someone they don’t know.

Perfect to play for your Halloween Party or have running in the background as you’re carving jack-o-lanterns or sorting out your trick-or-treating haul!

Parents and guardians should inspect treats before anyone eats them. Cut up and wash fruit to make sure it’s safe to consume. Homemade, wrapped treats should only be given out to children you know. On behalf of the entire Pennsauken Police Department, we hope that everyone stays safe and has a very Happy Halloween!
