Welsh Heritage Day At Griffith Morgan Homestead On March 3
Pennsauken Historical Society opens its new year of history with the annual celebration of the Morgan family homeland of Wales at Griffith Morgan Homestead with music, food, and fun for the whole family.
A Welsh mariner named Griffith Morgan went to sea in the 17th century and wound up being one of the first settlers of our community of Pennsauken. Annually, we begin our year on the weekend nearest St. David’s Day to celebrate the history, culture, and identity of Wales; and that means music, poetry, folklore, and a history of castles, dragons, and pirates! On Sunday, March 3, Griffith Morgan Homestead will host Welsh Heritage Day with hearth cookery in the tradition of farmhouse Welsh cuisine; the chantey singing crew of pirates calling themselves The Sea Dogs; and the beautiful, ages-old instrument of the Welsh bards, the harp, presented by the talented Laura Dishong. The story of Wales is one of stubborn cultural survival spanning many centuries and still thriving today. Learn some of the stories of the heroes and heroines of the Welsh nation, mythical and historical, from Rhiannon and King Arthur to the Tudors and Dylan Thomas.
Welsh Heritage Day opens from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Laura Disshong will play on the harp from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., while the hearth cookery and the musical pillaging of the Sea Dogs will run throughout the day. Tastes of Welsh imported delicacies will be offered as refreshment. All are croeso (welcome) just remember to say diolch (thank you) for a warm Welsh cake!
Admission and parking for Welsh Heritage Day at Griffith Morgan Homestead are free. Memberships to Pennsauken Historical Society and volunteer opportunities are always available for you! Donations to support our work in local history and preservation are always appreciated as well.
