One More Munch And A Movie, Contest Winners Announced
By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library
Back by very popular demand, there’ll be one last Munch and a Movie on Tuesday, June 14 from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the Library’s Community Room, before we stop for the summer. We can’t reveal the name of the flick, but May’s feature was the Academy Award nominee cold war thriller “Bridge of Spies,” starring Tom Hanks, so you can bet June’s will be another blockbuster! But if you’re impatient, you can always call the Library at (856) 665-5959 to find out what’s being shown. At any rate, don’t forget your lunch or other munchies and we’ll be ready with the coffee, tea, water, and snacks. This popular program will resume in the fall with more great films.
Poetry Contest Winners
Our six judges burned the midnight oil to pick the winners of our poetry contest, not an easy, not an easy task when you consider there were 237 eligible entries from a variety of schools and the community. Creativity seemed to be the order of the day, with categories from shape poems to word poems, serious to amusing.
Our first and second place winners from the Primary Grades (K-1) Shape Poem category were Jasali Lantigue and Katelyn Ngo for “Blueberry Flowers” and “Koala” respectively; and in the Word Poem category, Aairon Thomas and Giana Lopez for “What are Shapes?” and “Broccoli.” Ngan Do and Alejandro Roberts placed first and second respectively in the Elementary Grades 2-4 category with their serious poems, ”I am…” and “The Young Boy.” In the amusing categories, Isaiah Doughty for “Isaiah’s Bio Poem” and Joseph Gigliotti’s “Limerick” finished the Elementary Grades 2-4 category. In the Elementary Grades 5-8, Ciara Carver took first place for her serious poem “Funny,” and Ore` Adebanjo won the first place prize for his amusing “Max.” In the High School category, first prize winner was Jamere Carter for “Quason.” Finally, the adult first prize winner, Clare McClernan, wrote “The Days of our Lives.”
Second only to the poets themselves were our wonderful judges, without whose hard work the contest wouldn’t come together, so thanks to all. Thanks also to our MC and awards presenter for the evening, Principal Diane Joyce of Baldwin Elementary School and Carson Elementary School, who once again showed her coping skills once again during the inevitable midsentence-microphone-malfunction we‘ve come to expect each year.
You can see a display of the award winning poems in the Library lobby from June 6-24. The winning submissions are also included at the bottom of this article.
Cookie Sale A Tasty Success
Special shout-outs to all the bakers and buyers who helped make our Mother’s Day Cookie Sale such a success. We sold out in record time, and the biggest hits were chocolate chips and sugar cookies. We plan to keep up the cookie sale tradition and will be setting some dates for later in the year.
