Pennsauken invites the entire community to the Township’s annual Juneteenth Celebration. Held on Saturday, June 13, noon to 3:00 p.m. at the town’s municipal complex, 2400 Merchantville Ave., this special event honors equality, community, and culture.
“We’re looking forward to celebrating Juneteenth with our entire Township community,” said Pennsauken Mayor Patrick Olivo. “We invite our families and neighbors to join us as we embrace the freedom, equality, love, and acceptance that make our nation special.”

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned that slavery was abolished in the United States and that they were free. The oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is marked by music, dance, food, and community. It also is an opportunity to reflect on African American history and culture, as well as the ongoing struggle for equality and justice for all.
For Juneteenth, attendees will have opportunities to enjoy food, music, and vendors; connect as a community committed to unity; and honor the significance of the day along with special guest speakers.
A true highlight of Pennsauken’s celebration will be the performance of the Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble, one of the largest professional authentic dance groups in the country.
Juneteenth is not just an important moment in our nation’s history; it’s a reminder of strong desire we share for justice and equality, and that there’s much more we have to accomplish,” said Mayor Olivo. “Let’s gather as a community to truly celebrate what it means to live freely and without hate or division.”
As many of the performers and vendors are also supporting other community events that weekend, there is no rain date for the Juneteenth Celebration.
