Congratulations To The Winners Of Friends Of The Library Raffle

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

The six lucky winners of our fall raffle, who won baskets worth more than $300 each filled with gift cards and other merchandise donated by generous merchants in our area, will be celebrating the holidays in style, no doubt. After treating themselves at local restaurants, maybe   some of their winnings will help add a few surprises to their fortunate gift recipients during this upcoming holiday season.

Friends Of The Pennsauken Library Hold Annual Book And Tech Sale

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

The Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library have been collecting books, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays for our upcoming annual book and tech sale, taking place during normal operating hours from October 13-15 in the Library’s Community Room. There’s still time for you to drop off a box or bag or several of each to help us make the sale a big success. For those donating three or more boxes or bags, we’ll provide a receipt for tax purposes; and if you’ve been a prolific reader who has five or more boxes to donate, we’ll be happy to pick them up for you if you call us at (856) 665-5959, ext. 7. Sorry, but we can’t take magazines, VCR tapes, or damaged books. But whether you’re donating or not, you’ll want to be sure to get to the Library that weekend to take advantage of our bargain prices. Winter is coming and who wants to be caught on a cold, snowy indoor day without a good read or a good movie?

Learning At The Pennsauken Free Public Library

There is so much going on at the Pennsauken Free Public Library and you can be a part of it!

This month, we will offer mini introductions to YouTube, which allows you video access to a vast array of tutorials, such as cutting hair, fixing plumbing, woodworking, dance steps, knitting, and more! Learning new tasks helps create new synapses in the brain which improves “brain fitness.” So come on out to the library to expand your learning experience and flex your brain! Mini Introductions to YouTube will take place on Fridays, Aug. 4, 11, 18, and 25 in 30-minute one-on-one sessions from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Space is limited to two persons per Friday, so call or come in to sign-up at the Reference Desk right away.

Pennsauken Library Working Through Air Conditioning Issues

Submitted By The Pennsauken Free Public Library

If you’ve visited the Pennsauken Free Public Library recently, you may have noticed it’s been a little… warm. That’s because the air conditioning system at the Library has failed.

For the last several weeks, the Township has been working on replacing the entire system, as well as installing new duct work to more effectively cool the Library. Since this is a municipal allocation of funds, the process takes longer than it would for a business or a residence. In the meantime, we’re doing what we can to make both patrons and staff as comfortable as possible until the new system is in and operational.

Currently, there are almost a dozen individual air conditioning units installed throughout the building in key areas. We are hoping these units will make things more comfortable inside the Library on hotter summer days. During times of extreme heat and humidity, the Library may have unexpected closures.

Residents are encouraged to call the Pennsauken Free Public Library at (856) 665-5959 before any visits on warmer days to ensure that the building is open. You can also visit the Pennsauken Free Public Library on Facebook for daily updates as well.

We apologize for any inconvenience this issue causes our patrons. Both the Library and the Township are doing everything possible to get things cooler as soon as possible.

Cookie Sale, Ira’s Tree Of Knowledge Support Pennsauken Library

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

Mother’s Day is coming up and that can mean only one thing: another Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library Cookie Sale, just in time to coddle Mom with sweets as good as if you made them yourself. We’ll open shop at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13 in the Library lobby and close at 3:00 p.m. or until we run out of supplies. Cookies are $1 a bag and come in a variety of flavors; and if you’re a member of the Friends, you’ll even get a free bag for showing your membership card. But if you’re not a Friend, why not sign up that day, become a member and get your sign-up bag free?

There are other ways to honor Mom besides cookies. Consider giving her a beautiful brass leaf engraved with her name and a favorite quote or sentiment on Ira’s Tree of Knowledge on the Library lobby wall. It would let not only her but everyone else who passes it realize how special she is. Leaves are available to select, and each is $200. Lifetime members of the Friends are eligible for a 20 percent discount. You’ll find more information in the Ira’s Tree of Knowledge brochure on the lobby desk.

Funds raised by the Friends go to support the Pennsauken Free Public Library with resources and programs not covered in the organization’s operating budget.

Friends Of The Library Hold Second Annual Valentine’s Day Cookie Sale

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

February: a month to celebrate presidents and precedents. And while Presidents’ Day gives many of us a well deserved day off, Valentine’s Day is a tried and true old standard for lovers everywhere. Last year, the Friends of the Free Public Library added what we hope will soon become a February precedent for Valentine’s Day aficionados: our second annual Valentine’s Day Cookie Sale. On Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 11:00 a.m., we’ll fill up the tables in the Library’s lobby with home-baked cookies, just in time for gift giving to all those special someones on your list. And at just one dollar a bag, you can fill a basket full of cookies. Come early, though. We usually sell out fast; and once they’re gone, oh well…
