Friends Of Library Congratulate Poetry Contest Winners
The six judges had a tough time choosing the best from among the 341 entries – nearly 100 more than last year – in the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library’s 15th annual Mary W. Levin Poetry Contest. Students from six Pennsauken schools participated, along with several home-schooled poets and a baker’s dozen of adult entries rounding out the pack. Not only were the poems themselves creative, but equally so were the “vehicles” they came on: literally all sizes and shapes ranging from 5” x 6” scrap paper to an 8” construction paper fir tree. Several even came with accompanying drawings on extra-large 11” x 17” sheets!
Poetry Contest Submissions Due May 1
Submissions for the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library’s 15th annual poetry contest are due by May 1 at the Pennsauken Library circulation desk; they can also be mailed to Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library, 5605 Crescent Blvd., Pennsauken, NJ 08110. Please keep in mind that no submissions will be returned.
The contest is open to all residents of Pennsauken and Merchantville. There can be only one entry per person and applicants cannot have won in the previous two years. All entries must be original works and not previously submitted for print or electronic publication. A completed submission form must be attached to each poem. Winners will be notified and are expected to attend an award reception on June 3 to receive their prize.

Workshops And Artists And Fun, Oh My!
There’s a lot to be said for traditions. We look forward to them because they’re comfortable year after year. But when we add a little pizzazz here and there without changing the basics everyone knows and looks forward to, those traditions become a little different and a little more interesting each year.
The Friends of the Pennsauken Free Library annual art show certainly qualifies as a tradition now, and last month we gave you the basics: the what, when, why and where of the show. Now here’s the pizzazz: the little extras that’ll make this year’s show stand out.
In a word, it’s workshops! Workshops, workshops, workshops! For all the would-be impressionists out there who want to hone their painting skills, Fran Bennett will be offering a watercolor workshop on Sunday, April 19 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the library’s community room. Don your smocks and berets and plan to join her for some artistic techniques and insights.
Library Spotlights Care Package Program, Red Scarf Project
When foster children turn 18, they are shut out of the foster care system and no longer receive support because at that point they are legally adults. Foster Care to Success (FC2S) has been working since 1981 to provide a support system to new adults who have left the foster care system. FC2S is the oldest and largest national non-profit organization working with college bound foster youth. Annually, some 5,000 former foster care students turn to them for help.
