Mayor Martinez Recognized For Historic Appointment

At the beginning of the Feb. 2 meeting of Pennsauken’s Township Committee meeting, Mayor Vince Martinez was surprised by acknowledgements from representatives at the county, state, and federal level, recognizing the first Hispanic male mayor in the history of the town. Martinez was sworn in as mayor during the Township Committee reorganization meeting in January.

Congressman Norcross Announces $970,000 In Federal Funding For Food Bank Of South Jersey

Last month, Congressman Donald Norcross was on hand at the Food Bank of South Jersey to announce almost $1 million in federal funding has been secured for the largest hunger relief organization in the region. These funds are earmarked for the purchase of hybrid vehicles, which will not only decrease the food bank’s carbon footprint, but also expand its ability to serve the food insecure throughout South Jersey.
Police Issue Statement Regarding Car Crash Overnight
The following is a statement from the Pennsauken Township Police Department regarding last night’s car crash:
On January 11, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Pennsauken Police Responded to River Road and Springfield Avenue for a motor vehicle crash involving a 2008 Honda Civic and a 2016 Chevrolet pickup truck.
As a result of the crash, all occupants of both vehicles were transported to the hospital with injuries. One passenger, Grace Lopez of Woodlynne, NJ, age 19, was fatally injured. One of the passengers is in critical condition, another is in stable condition. This incident is still under investigation.

“Battle of the Badges” Blood Drive Returns January 19
Pennsauken’s first responders will once again complete to see who can recruit the most eligible blood donors in the community during an American Red Cross “Battle of the Badges” blood drive on Thursday, Jan. 19, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Pennsauken Country Club, 3800 Haddonfield Rd.
Presenting donors will have the opportunity to cast a vote for Pennsauken’s police or fire departments, with the winning agency earning a plaque and bragging rights; they will also receive a free Red Cross t-shirt while supplies last. In addition, all presenting donors will receive a voucher for a free medium hot coffee and wake up wrap from Dunkin.

Fire Chief Palumbo Retires, Succeeded By Hutton

Last month, Township Committee announced a change in the leadership of the Pennsauken Township Fire Department. After almost three decades of service to the Pennsauken community, including 12 as fire chief, Joseph V. Palumbo, Sr. retired from the department affective December 31, 2022. His successor is 34-year-old Jonathan B. Hutton, a lifelong resident and third-generation Township firefighter.
New Mayor, Deputy Mayor Sworn In At Township Committee Reorganization

During the Jan. 6 Pennsauken Township Committee reorganization meeting, the governing body’s leadership was selected for 2023. Vince Martinez is the town’s newest mayor; and Patrick Olivo is this year’s deputy mayor. The is the first time the two have served Pennsauken in this capacity.
CCPO Major Crimes Unit Investigates Shooting Of Man In Pennsauken

The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Pennsauken Police Department are investigating the shooting of a man on Saturday evening, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Pennsauken Acting Police Chief Phillip Olivo.
