As social media takes on a more prominent role in our society, the Pennsauken School District has looked into increasing its social media presence over the last few years. While there is currently no district-wide social media page, several departments have used social media to highlight Pennsauken students and their accomplishments. A perfect example is our high school’s athletic department, headed by Eric Mossop. You can find Pennsauken Athletics on both Facebook and Twitter.

By Dr. Ronnie Tarchichi, MEd2., M.S., M.B.S., Superintendent, Pennsauken Public Schools

February and the spring semester is upon us. We have had a wonderful and diligent school year thus far. Thank you to the administrators, teachers, parents, and students for their hard work during the New Year. I encourage everyone to stay upbeat and positive as we approach this semester and standardized testing. Let’s show our students that there is no mountain too high for them to climb, either physically or academically.

As we usher in a New Year, the Pennsauken Board of Education will start 2017 with its annual reorganization meeting. The purpose of the reorganization meeting is to certify and accept the November election results, officially install those individuals who were successfully elected in November and to appoint the Board of Education’s President and Vice president for the upcoming year. For districts that hold their elections in November, this special meeting must, by law, occur during the first week of January.

Phifer Students Take Virtual Tour Of Ancient Ruins

Phifer Middle School students look at Mayan Ruins via a virtual field trip.

Phifer teacher Mrs. Beals, along with Park Avenue technology coach Mrs. Sara Allen, teamed up to organize a tour of the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. And students never left the classroom.

This was, in fact, a virtual tour; students in Mrs. Beals’s class attached an iPhone to cardboard goggles and followed their teacher on a “tour” of ruins. The class has been studying the earliest Americans cultures that arose in Mesoamerica in their social studies class.

The first-ever virtual field trip at Phifer was a success. Teachers hope to continue to use virtual field trips for students to explore many different, faraway places from the convenience of the classroom.

In addition, I would like to thank all Township and School District personnel, as well as the Board of Education, for assisting us with our first “Touch-a-Truck” event. It was an enormous success. Thank you to all the parents and students who came out to support this event.

Board Of Education Members Get “Schooled”

By the Pennsauken Board of Education: Nick Perry, President; Allyson Meloni-Scavuzzo, Vice President; Cheryl Duffy; Michael Hurley; Diane Johnson; Leona Moss; Meg Snyder; Orlando Viera; and JoAnn Young

Board of education members make decisions that impact not only school districts but also the communities in which those districts are located. But what makes them qualified to do so, especially given that board members come from a variety of backgrounds that do not necessarily include education?
