“First Sunday” Events At Pennsauken’s Historic Homes Continue In June And July

By Robert Fisher-Hughes, AAP Columnist and Amateur Historian

On Sunday, June 3, the very fabric of our nation will be celebrated at both Griffith Morgan House and Burrough-Dover House in very different ways!

That day, Griffith Morgan House opens a temporary exhibit and program on the domestic arts of the needle, thread, and fabric called, “Women’s Art:  Using the Needle to Bring Beauty and Utility to the Home.” An exhibit of the range of beautiful, functional, and historic textile work as performed by the women who occupied Griffith Morgan House, Burrough-Dover House and the many other homes of earlier eras, the displays include quilts, samplers, needlepoint, weaving, and embroidery. Docents in period dress, also exemplifying the needle arts, will describe the work and the range of useful creativity embodied in these domestic crafts. The exhibit will remain on display also through the Griffith Morgan House’s “First Sunday” event on July 1.

Tours of the historic home, refreshments, and admission are free. Donations will always be gratefully accepted to support our local history.

The most symbolic and therefore sacred of our national fabric will be celebrated at Burrough-Dover House on Sunday, June 3, as Pennsauken Historical Society hosts its traditional Flag Day commemoration with a display of flags illustrating the history and growth of the United States from its beginnings to the present day. The collection of flags swaying in the breeze and the historic home and grounds for a background make for a wonderful day for a picnic, to tour the house and museum, observe the Nature Trail beside Pennsauken Creek, and generally enjoy a rare afternoon in June. Light refreshments will be available and admission and tours are free.

Both Burrough-Dover House and Griffith Morgan House will be open for these historical community events from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.; and remember, both houses are open Sunday, June 3, and Sunday, July 1, so step back in time for a moment in your own Township.

At both these historic houses in Pennsauken, there is plenty of free parking too! Memberships and volunteer opportunities are available and donations are always welcome to help Pennsauken Historical Society sustain its own mission in our community.

Burrough-Dover House is located at 9201 Burrough-Dover Lane, off Haddonfield Rd. near the Wyndam Rd. traffic light. Griffith Morgan House is located at 243 Griffith Morgan Lane, off River Rd. between Delair and Rt. 73.
