Friends Of The Library Sponsor Variety Of Fall Events

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

The Friends of the Library are hosting a variety of programs to be held after Labor Day.

The AARP bilingual Smart Driver Course is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 29-30 in the Library’s Community Room. Held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. each day, participants need to attend both days in order to receive a certificate for a possible 5 percent discount from your insurance company. Best to check with them first, however, to see if you’re eligible. And in honor of Spanish Heritage Month, the price for the course has been reduced to $10.00 for all participants, regardless of whether you’re an AARP member or not.

FOLAARPThe course will be given in Spanish, but instruction books will be in both English and Spanish. Anyone interested can sign up at the Library’s Circulation Desk and will need to leave a check at that time, payable to AARP. Flyers with more details are available at the Library.

Next, you’re invited to come hear local historian Kevin Woyce tell all the secrets he’s learned over the years about the Jersey Shore: from how towns got their names to why they built a hotel that looks like an elephant, and much, much more! That program takes place Sunday, Sept. 27, beginning at 2:00 p.m. There’ll be a slide show, followed by a Q&A session. There will also be time to buy Kevin’s book, “Jersey Shore History and Facts,” for $10 and have it autographed. Prior to the program, there will be a cookie sale in the lobby before the program – think of it as a reminder of good things to come, since the Friends’ annual bake sale will be taking place a few weeks later. The signup sheet for this program will be at the Library’s Circulation Desk.

Samaritan Healthcare will host “Timely Conversations” on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. to give participants suggestions on how to talk with family members about those uncomfortable final arrangement topics no one wants to address. Again, sign up is at the Circulation Desk.

Finally, the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater New Jersey still plans to make a presentation in mid-September on recognizing signs and symptoms; details will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Also, don’t forget that the Friends’ annual book and tech sale is just around the corner, coupled with our bake and goodies sale and raffle. So stay tuned, sign up, and maybe plan to volunteer a few hours to help the Friends. For more information, visit the Friends’ Facebook page or e-mail friendsoflibrary@yahoo.com. Also be sure to join us at our monthly meeting, held on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 7:00 p.m., at the Pennsauken Free Public Library.
