“George’s Tailgate” Fundraiser On October 21 Benefits Scholarship Fund

By Tony Saranchak, Chaplain, GSF Sr. Scholarship Fund

This year marks 10 years of the George S. Figueroa, Sr. Scholarship Fund providing scholarship grants to Pennsauken firefighters and their families. The Fund was started after an anonymous donation to award scholarships in George’s memory. It is perhaps fitting that this all started with an anonymous donation, because over the years, I have heard various stories from people on how George helped them and did things behind the scenes no one ever knew about. That was George!

For five years straight, a golf tournament was held at the Pennsauken Country Club; it almost became too big for its own good and running it became a year-long process of planning and work. It was decided to take a break from the golf event, and that had led to other new and exciting fundraisers.

On Sunday Oct. 21, at the East Pennsauken Fire Station, 8362 Stockton Ave., we will hold another “George’s Tailgate” Party. George was a huge Eagles fan, so we rent a large screen TV, get some good food, responsible drinking – and “one for the road”– and raise funds for a good cause!

There will be a silent auction for a variety of items at the event, including a 60’ TV. Tickets for the event are $20 each; children under 12 are $5. The doors open at noon on game day. Please see any East Pennsauken Fire Company member for tickets; they are also available at H&H Deli.

There are way too many people and business to list here that have supported the Fund over the last 10 years; we will never forget who you are! Thank you from the Figueroa family, East Pennsauken Volunteer Fire Association, and the George S. Figueroa Sr. Scholarship Fund Committee.
