Historic Home For The Holidays In Pennsauken
By Robert Fisher-Hughes, AAP Columnist and Amateur Historian
For its last regularly scheduled event of the year, historic Burrough-Dover House again offers a special holiday treat for the community, with an evening of historic Yule traditions and a visit from the jolly, old elf himself! On Friday, Dec. 7, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., history and holidays come together like egg and nog to create a magical event that is fast becoming a local tradition.
How many families begin their holiday season with a visit to a shopping mall to wait in a long line and pay a premium price to have their little ones’ picture taken? The Pennsauken Historical Society invites you to visit its 300-year-old headquarters off Haddonfield Rd., which will be decked for the holidays and warmly aglow with luminaries, candles and a fire in the hearth. In the true Victorian parlor, a group of carolers earn their wassail, singing the songs of the season, a recitation of “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” and other holiday favorites of the old days when home entertainment was both live and participatory. Cookies and warming treats wait in the adjoining great kitchen of the house, with the family table bedecked with greens and ornamentation. Beside the hearth and lit by its glowing coals and bright flames, the jolly guest of honor holds court, receiving his small visitors, while a photograph taken by family and friends captures the magical moment to be shared and preserved in memory. Best of all, your holiday visit to Burrough-Dover House is free of charge for admission, parking, and photography, though your donations are always appreciated to support the historical mission of Pennsauken Historical Society throughout the approaching new year.
Burrough-Dover House is located at 9201 Burrough-Dover Lane, off Haddonfield Rd. opposite the Wyndam Rd. traffic light.
