Life has given us quite a few lemons lately; so the old saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” couldn’t be truer this year. The Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library are hoping to make a different kind of lemonade this month, and we hope you’ll be there to help out.

Lemonade 4 Change is a way some communities have raised money to provide their public libraries with funding to enhance and increase their collections of books on diversity for all ages. Our way of looking at life these days has definitely changed; and the events of the past few weeks have shown that how we look at cultural diversity is also different. The planning committee for the event is made up of residents who represent the diversity of our community, including the organizers of the Black Lives Matter event Pennsauken held in early June.

Lemonade 4 Change is a two-part fundraiser: one virtual and one physical. The virtual lemonade stand will solicit monetary donations online, including on Facebook and on the Friends’ website at Pennsaukenlibraryfriends.org. Our physical stands will be drive-through, no contact events to be held in several locations throughout the community. Social distancing will of course be observed by the volunteers; and the lemonade stands set up will be in compliance with CDC guidelines for health and safety:

  • Sunday, Aug. 23,  1:00 – 3:00 p.m., Pennsauken Free Public Library, 5605 N. Crescent Blvd.
  • UPDATED: Sunday, Aug. 30, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., PYAA Soccer Complex, 6730 Westfield Ave.
  • Saturday, Sept. 5, 1:00 3:00 p.m. (Rain Date: Sunday, Sept. 6), G.H. Carson Elementary, 4150 Garfield Ave.
  • Saturday, Sept. 12, 1:00 3:00 p.m. (Rain Date: Sunday, Sept. 13) Delair Elementary School, 850 Derousse Ave.

Our goal is $4,500; we hope these events will make a difference to everyone in our community and add to our wonderful Library’s collection of up-to-the-minute books, eBooks, and audio books to help us all through these times. We look forward to your participation as well and count on your support.

Thank you and as always, stay safe and well.
