In a video posted on social media, Pennsauken Mayor Tim Killion announced that there will be a flag placement at the town’s 9-11 Memorial the evening of Thursday, Sept. 10.
“This Friday marks the 19th anniversary of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93. And after discussing the matter with Township Committee and our Director of Public Safety, we will be holding our annual flag placement at Pennsauken’s 9-11 Memorial on Thursday evening,” said Killion. “In the midst of the coronavirus, we are constantly weighing concerns for the public’s health against regaining a sense of normalcy. Our annual flag placement on 9-11 is one of those special things that connect us as a community. Looking back at our initial decision, we realize we were being overly cautious and that wasn’t the right choice. And we are sorry for that. Our intention wasn’t to upset anyone or neglect the memory of that day.”
Killion went on to thank the residents who reached out and asked the administration to hold the 9-11 flag placement this year, which was originally canceled in an announcement last month.
“We would like to thank all of the members of our community who reached out and asked us to reconsider. It’s very clear that our residents are willing to be responsible while participating and care deeply about continuing this beautiful tradition this year.”
Pennsauken’s annual flag placement at the Township’s 9-11 Memorial, located at the corner of Rt. 130 and Merchantville Ave., will take place on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 11:45 p.m. Participants are asked to arrive a few minutes early. The municipality is asking any who attends to please wear a face mask as well as gloves. Other safety protocols will be in place to ensure that everyone in attendance is being as careful as possible.
“I hope that through this annual ceremony, our town and neighboring communities never forget that tragic day,” added Killion. “And once again, I apologize… we didn’t get this one right but we are fixing it and appreciate your understanding.”
