Pennsauken Lions Club Announce 2019 Citizens Of The Year
Each year, the Pennsauken Lions Club presents its Citizen of the Year award, given to people who have volunteered their time and effort to the betterment of Pennsauken. This year, the Lions Club is pleased to announce that Janet Stevens and Tom McCue have been selected as co-recipients of the award.
Janet Stevens has been a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America for over 30 years and is currently the properties chairman for the organization in Central and Southern New Jersey. Stevens is involved in the Pennsauken Community Garden, the town’s annual Harvest Festival, and serves as a member of the Pennsauken Library Strategic Planning Committee. She is also treasurer of the Pennsauken-Merchantville Area Chamber of Commerce.
Tom McCue just completed his 20th year of Boy Scout summer camp with Troop 118, which serves Pennsauken and Merchantville youth. McCue first got involved with the Cub Scouts with his two sons and went on to be a den leader. He then did double duty when his oldest moved on to the Boy Scout Troop. In 2003, he became scoutmaster and remained with the Troop even after both of his sons left Scouting. He remained involved with Cub Scout Pack 116, helping with the dens, teaching knife skills and pinewood derby car building. He invented the “500 Club” for Scouts participating in the Pinewood Derby with cars that weigh 5 ounces. McCue even helped out as a parent in the Girl Scouts while his daughters were involved.
The dinner to honor Janet and Tom will be held on Monday, Sept. 30, at the PYAA Field House on Marion and Elm avenues. Gathering time will be between 6:00 and 6:25 p.m.; festivities will begin 6:30 p.m. with an opening flag ceremony by some of Tom’s Boy Scouts. Everyone will enjoy a delicious buffet dinner prepared by Macaro’s Catering. If you would be interested in attending the dinner, cost is $35.00 per person.
