Carson Students Hold Mock Presidential Election
Yesterday, students at Carson School took part in a special event celebrating the voting process by holding a mock presidential election.
The mock election was developed by Mrs. Savino and Tryon’s gifted classes. Students presented the idea to the school’s principal, Mrs. Joyce; employed Google Documents to record and tally the results; and helped students with the voting process. Students could choose from the two main presidential candidates and even got a sticker for voting.
Throughout the day, election results were announced over the loud speaker to help simulate how different parts of the country receive updates on the election after polls close in areas with different time zones.
So how did it all break down? One candidate received 83 percent of the vote with a decisive victory. We’ll have to see how this fun and educational event reflect the actual results of today’s general election.
Annual Space Day Held At Carson Elementary
On May 26, Principal Joyce, staff, students, special guests and parent volunteers participated in a day full of awesome space activities at G.H. Carson Elementary School. Students learned about life in space, how rockets are launched into space, planets in our solar system, as well as gravity and its effect on our planet. Activities included a space presentation by the Franklin Institute, rocket launches, space songs, space crafts, a display of an actual tire used in a past spaceship launch provided by NASA, and a display of rocket ships built by kindergarten students. This year’s event was made extra special with a guest appearance from Dr. Lorraine Fesq, a former G. H. Carson student who now is the principal engineer in the Engineering Development Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Labortatory.

Carson Physical Education Classes Rock
Students in the third and fourth grade had a chance to focus on teamwork during their physical education classes at Carson School. They worked in small groups to create a dance to perform in front of their classmates. Students worked very hard and the dances were amazing!
Carson students in kindergarten, as well as first and second grade, were developing hand-eye coordination. These students had a chance to pretend they were in the circus juggling and balancing acts. What a fun time!
Carson’s Tryon Teacher Of The Year
On April 15, Mrs. Nancy Tryon was named Teacher of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Gifted Children. This award is presented to one teacher in New Jersey who has made a positive impact through their work with gifted children.

We thank Mrs. Tryon for her dedication every day to our gifted students, to Carson School, and to our district. Congratulations Mrs. Tryon and thank you!
Kindergartners Learn About Community Workers
By Mrs. Davis, ESL Teacher, Carson Elementary
Our kindergarten English language learners have studied many things about community workers. Each student discussed what they would like to be when they grow up and created a hat to go with each occupation, such as firefighter, police officer, nurse, doctor, salesperson, and gardener. In addition, students had a special joy singing the “Everywhere in Town” song with their community helper hats to the other classes at Carson School.
The More You Read, The More You Will Know
By Kaitlin Kelly, Second Grade, Carson Elementary School
At Carson Elementary School, the month of March began with a celebration to kick off the start of Read Across America Month in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Students across all grades participated in a Vocabulary Hat Parade throughout the school and a “Drop Everything and Read” event.
Students in second grade spent time reading some well known and some not-so-well known Dr. Seuss books, including his final written piece, “What Pet Should I Get?”
Reading was at the forefront of everything we did in March. Students participated in a nightly reading challenge, which culminated with an enjoyable celebration in the school library.
Carson School students enjoyed every opportunity they received to show off their love for reading!

PHS Latin Club Visits Carson’s “Chapter Chatters”
By Julie Amer, Tara Barnstead, and Melissa Savino
The “Chapter Chatters,” the book club at Carson Elementary School, read the book, “The Chocolate Touch,” by Patrick Skene Catling. In February, Mrs. Kubichek’s Latin Club from Pennsauken High School joined a book club meeting, where they performed a version of the myth of King Midas. Students from the Chapter Chatters were encouraged to draw similarities between “The Chocolate Touch” and the story of King Midas. The Latin Club will continue to work with the students in the Carson School Book Club meetings by performing plays of mythology and helping to facilitate student discussion.
