Obituary: John M. Coyle
John M. Coyle, age 81, of Merchantville, passed away peacefully at home on September 19, 2024.
He was the loving husband of 60 years to Mary Ellen (nee McDermott); devoted father of Patty (Paul Hoffman), Loretta (Tom Huslin), Jay (Pam Colozzi) and Joe (Chanin McDowell); proud grandfather of Christian, Jessica (Wade Kennedy), Kristen (Brandon Traino), Olivia, Joseph, Cora and Kathleen and great-grandfather of Lilly Felicity; beloved brother of Linda (Peter Moller); brother-in-law of Doris Matlack; and cherished cousin of many. John is pre-deceased by parents Marie (nee Muldowney) and Colonel John J. Coyle of the Fairmount section of Philadelphia, where John was born and raised.
John was a graduate of Merchantville High School and long-time active parishioner of Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church in Merchantville, NJ. He was a Fourth Degree Knight with St. Peter’s Knights of Columbus Council #6735. John had a very successful 40-year sales career in Fleet Management with Holman Enterprises’ ARI branch. He served seven years in the U.S. Army Reserves 915 MASH unit at Fort Dix as a Medic and Platoon Leader, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant.
John had a strong work ethic which he is proud to have passed down to his children and grandchildren. His fierce love for his country and devotion to his Catholic faith were always evident in his generosity of time and talent.
Blessed to travel often with his wife and children, John and Mary’s favorite repeat destinations included Hawaii and Ireland. A decades-long resident of Merchantville, John was a proud homeowner for many years in The Gardens neighborhood of Ocean City, NJ, which he generously shared with his children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and classic war movies, and “furrvently” devoted to lap cat, Princess, and porch cat, Tux.
Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Thursday, September 26, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., and Friday, September 27, 2024, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at the Falco/Caruso & Leonard Pennsauken Funeral Home, 6600 N. Browning Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church, 43 W. Maple Ave in Merchantville, NJ 08109. Interment will follow at New St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bellmawr, NJ 08031.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St Peter Church at the above address.
Merchantville Woman’s Club’s “A Taste Of Pennsauken” Returns On May 23
The Woman’s Club of Merchantville is once again sponsoring “A Taste of Pennsauken.” The event will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Pennsauken Country Club, 3800 Haddonfield Rd. Come out and sample the delicious cuisine of many local restaurants! Tickets are just $20 per person; and a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Food Bank of South Jersey, other local charities, and our annual scholarship awards to deserving students.

Annual Pennsauken Shredding Event On April 22
The Pennsauken Environmental Commission is hosting its annual shredding event at the Park Avenue School Campus, 8201 Park Ave., on Saturday, April 22, from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
This paper-only shredding event is solely for Pennsauken and Merchantville residents, not businesses; those who attend must bring an I.D. Items for shredding should be placed in the rear of the vehicle, such as a trunk, truck bed, or an unoccupied back seat.
Grace Episcopal Fall Fair Held October 29
Grace Episcopal Church, 7 E. Maple Ave., Merchantville, is holding a fall fair on Saturday, Oct. 29, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The event features a large basket and gift card raffle; attendees can buy tickets to win one of three great prizes: a $1,500 Wegmans gift card, a $500 Wawa gift card, and a $250 Burlington store gift card.
The Fall Fair also includes Santa’s gift shop, where children to buy affordable gifts for mom and dad; a running train display by the Cherry Valley Model Railroad; and great food, including delicious Spanish food from the kitchen, as well as bake goods and deli table; and more.

The ninth annual Merchantville Music Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Merchantville Downtown Parking Area.

Pennsauken Mayor Jessica Rafeh and Merchantville Mayor Ted Brennan will be the guest speakers at the upcoming networking luncheon of the Pennsauken-Merchantville Area Chamber of Commerce, held on Wednesday, June 8, noon, at the Pennsauken Country Club, 3800 Haddonfield Rd.
Each year, the mayors of Pennsauken and Merchantville address local businesses and share updates on the economic development initiatives in their communities.

McFarlan’s Market To Close This Month

Earlier today, McFarlan’s Market in Merchantville announced via social media that the store will be closing later this month.
“We will be closing the Merchantville location on December 14, 2019, while we continue to search for a buyer. Please know we did not take making this decision lightly,” according to a statement made on the store’s Facebook page. “We will VERY much miss our Merchantville family and the friends we’ve made over the last 9 years. You all made this a very special chapter in our lives that we will never forget.”
