Man Charged in Pennsauken Shooting

Anthony Ortiz, 29, of Pennsauken, was charged with the attempted murder of his 24-year-old girlfriend after a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon.

Pennsauken Police Investigating Shooting

According to a NBC 10 news report, a woman was found with a gunshot wound to the head earlier today in Pennsauken.

Pennsauken Police responded to a 9-1-1 call shortly before 1:00 p.m. after the victim’s boyfriend reportedly found her in a home on the 2200 block of Gross Ave.

The victim was found unresponsive and taken Cooper University Hospital, where she is on life support.

Celebrating National Public Works Week In Pennsauken

The week of May 20 is dedicated as “National Public Works Week.” Each year, the American Public Works Association (APWA) chooses a theme. According to the APWA, this year’s theme, entitled, “The Power of Public Works,” “gives voice to the impact the many facets of public works have on modern civilization.” The APWA’s overview includes some of the less glamorous functions: solid waste disposal, removing snow and the unseen work, such as emergency management response strategy planning for disasters. The latter part of the overview reads “and invites the public to celebrate their quiet dedication and indispensable influence on our way of life.”

Henry W. Longfellow Elementary School And Its Beginnings

Henry W. Longfellow Elementary School was one of the schools built during the boom years of the 1920s, when the entire Delaware Valley region was rapidly growing, Pennsauken included. Much of this growth was spurred by the expectations aroused by the construction of the first automobile bridge across the Delaware River south of Trenton, then called the Delaware River Bridge and, later, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. The post-World War years also caused a rapid expansion of business and industry in both Philadelphia and Camden; this in turn generated a rapid growth of population in the nearby suburbs, bringing many new families with children to Pennsauken.

Veterans PTSD Awareness Walk Held On June 2

American Legion F.W. Grigg Post 68 is sponsoring a PTSD Awareness Walk on Saturday, June 2. The public is invited to join local veterans as they walk the Merchantville Pike Path to bring awareness to this epidemic.

Nationally, communities everywhere are losing 22 veterans a day to suicide. Let the healing and understanding begin through the neighborhood walk.

The walk is held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants will meet in the parking lot across from the Merchantville Firehouse, 22 E. Park Ave., next to Eclipse Brewery. The event is free, no registration required. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Fallen Soldiers Remembered At Local Memorial Day Events

In observance of Memorial Day, members of the community and local veterans groups will hold ceremonies this month to remember and honor those men and women who lost their lives in service of their country in the Armed Forces.

Stotesbury Cup Regatta Comes To Cooper River

This weekend, Camden County’s Cooper River will host the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the world’s largest high school rowing event. Due to the region’s recent storms and rainy weather, officials are moving the regatta from its usual location, the Schuylkill River, out of concern for participant safety.

Auditions Held For “Mary Poppins Junior” May 15-16

Auditions for the Pennsauken Youth Action Committee’s performance of “Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, Jr.” will be held on Tuesday, May 15, and Wednesday, May 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Howard M. Phifer Middle School, 8201 Park Ave., Pennsauken. Adapted for children ages 7 to 14, “Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, Jr.” is based on the popular Disney-inspired Broadway musical that played for over 2,500 performances and received multiple Olivier and Tony Awards nominations.

Second Pennsauken Family Fun Fair On June 3

The Pennsauken School District will be hosting its second annual year-end family fun fair on Sunday, June 3, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at its Park Avenue Campus.

“As the school year comes to a close, this event is a great way to celebrate all the accomplishments of our students,” says Dr. Ronnie Tarchichi, superintendent, Pennsauken School District. “We’ve got a lot of fun activities planned for the fun fair and hope to see many of our families there.”

For just $5, children can receive a wrist band that gives them access to bounce houses, obstacle courses, mini golf, mobile arcade games, face painting, and more for the length of the event. Attendees will also be able to purchase items from a variety of vendors and can buy tasty offerings from various food trucks.
