Soap Making A Fun And Clean Summer Project

By Kathleen Harvey, AAP Columnist

Now that summer is upon us, we’re outside playing in the sun, sand, and gardens. This outdoor play leads to sweat and grime accumulating on us and our clothing. Consider making your own soap to get clean; it’s easy, frugal, creative, and fulfilling. There’s something satisfying about taking a bar of your own homemade soap into the bath or shower with you.

Freshness Abounds At Pennsauken’s Farmer And Food Market

By Rachael Shugars, AAP Columnist

In a world cursed with food deserts and an ever growing presence of fast food chains, we rely on the creativity of some to find ways to keep the food we eat fresh and homemade. As I strolled the aisles at Pennsauken’s first Farmer and Food Market, I found just that. It was a wealth of not just a well made product, but a person standing behind it, knowing they’re offering up something they made and that are proud of.

Doing Something Special For Father’s Day

By Kathleen Harvey, AAP Columnist

As Father’s Day approaches, many of us think, “What can I get him?” What will say thank you for raising you, for being there to witness your triumphs and comforting you through the tragedies? For all the sports games he attended, celebrating with you when you won, commiserating when you lost? For teaching you how to be handy, repair your car or things around the house, how communication and compromise can help elongate a good marriage.

Building A Rain Garden

By Kathleen Harvey, AAP Columnist

There is an old saying: “April showers bring May flowers.” We’ve had a wet spring, which has brought a bounty of beautiful, fragrant flowers in many colors, sizes, and shapes. But what if there is a low spot on your property, one that turns into a large puddle every time it rains? It won’t take much for that space to become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, or a mud puddle for pets and children. One way to solve the problem is by building a rain garden, a space filled with flowers and shrubs that benefit from periodic flooding.

Dyeing Easter Eggs The Old Fashioned – And All Natural – Way

By Kathleen Harvey, AAP Columnist

As the Easter Bunny comes hopping down my street with basket in hand, my thoughts turn to all the lovely colors that Easter eggs can be dyed. Where do those colors come from? If you are looking for a healthier alternative to baskets filled with plastic eggs containing candy and chocolate bunnies, grab the kids and head for the kitchen.

Starting Off A New Year By Enjoying Every Sandwich

By Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor

I’ve got some pretty eclectic tastes in music. Whether it’s classical, jazz, or a song from 1982 that just won’t die, there’s usually something I can pull up on my iPod that can match my mood.

During the weekend prior to writing my annual column, a quote popped into my head from one of my favorite artists, Warren Zevon, the musician best known for his hits “Werewolves of London,” “Lawyers, Guns, and Money,” and “Excitable Boy,” among others. Prior to his passing from cancer in 2003, Warren, who was a frequent guest on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” made his final appearance on the TV program; he was the only guest that night. When discussing his terminal diagnosis, he commented to Letterman that, “You’re reminded to enjoy every sandwich.” It was so simply poignant that “Enjoy Every Sandwich” became the name of a tribute album to him after his death.

Burrough-Dover House will be decorated for the holiday season and offer cheer to all who come by to start their merry season from noon to 4:00 p.m. Griffith Morgan House will hold its own traditional “Frost on the Pumpkin” event from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with authentic hearth cookery, living history demonstrations, and the life of a local farmhouse of olden times, as families prepared for the coming of winter. Both houses will offer light refreshments and historical tours of the colonial houses and museums of local history and nostalgia:  perfect for opening the holiday season!

Louisiana Chicken Now Open In Pennsauken

By Rachael Shugars, AAP Columnist

My adventure to this next location begins one day in October, when I had my son, Jack, and my nephew, Ryder, who are both two years old. We had just attended an event at the Pennsauken Free Public Library, along with some energetic playtime outside at the nearby playground. Suddenly, I had two toddlers screaming that they were hungry, and I needed to find them food before the “hanger” set in.

I remembered speaking with my editor about the new Louisiana Chicken on Rt. 130. Anyone in my family knows that I have a deep dislike for fast food chicken. I’ve been called crazy for thinking that Popeyes’ chicken is the furthest thing from appetizing; and my feelings for places like Boston Market and KFC don’t stray far from that. But, I soldiered on and decided to try this new chicken joint.
