“Who Let The Dogs Out?” Theme Tied Into Service Projects

By Mary Anne McFarland

Each year, Cub Scout Pack 116 picks an annual theme, which is used throughout the year at den and Pack meetings. Theme-related craft activities and decorations help make the Cubs’ annual Blue and Gold banquet more festive and also gets the pack prepared for the upcoming Cub-O-Ree, a special camping weekend held in May of next year.

The Cub-O-Ree’s theme is “Family Movie Night;” each Pack that participates must pick a movie or movies around which they will base their Saturday activities. This year, Pack 116 picked the theme “Who Let the Dog’s Out?” because they decided to highlight various Disney “dog movies,” such as “Lady and the Tramp,” “Oliver and Company,” and a few others.

The Scouts are also incorporating this theme into their participation in “Scouting for Food,” one of nation’s largest food drives that Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers participate in to support their local food pantries and hunger-relief agencies. In addition to collecting non-perishable food items, such as canned goods, peanut butter, fruit bars, applesauce, etc., the Cub Scouts will be accepting dog food, treats, cat litter, and other related items, which will be donated to the Almost Home Animal Shelter in Pennsauken.
